I got my M91/30 (after picking trough a pile for a good barrel) with the intention of shooting Vintage Military Rifle Matches. It took me a while to figure out the stripper clips and while doing that I've only shot my gongs at 100 & 200.

Today I decided to see what it would really do. I know MR only shoot 100 or 200 yards but I like to test my rifle/loads at the 300 Yard RF targets. I figure anyone can slop them in at 200 and 600 is more of a test of the shooters judging conditions.

Anyway after confirming my 300 yard zero, I fired my first 300 yard prone rapid fire string.

Got an 85-3. There was a 5 and two "7"s that probably wouldn't have been there if I practice a bit more working the bolt. The rest was pretty good. I need to work on my timing, I shoot way too fast (VMR matches gives you 80 Seconds, more then enough time.

Anyway the gun is a shooter even if I'm not. Used WW brass, 42 grns of 4895, CCI BR primers and Sierra 150 grn spitser bullets. 5 shot averaged 2521 FPS.

I can certainly see how the Russians gave the Germans so much trouble at Stalingrad.

Anyone wanting to shoot GSM matches with the 91/30 doesn't have to feel under gunned.

Re: Mosin Nagant

I read an article a year or so ago that compared the K 98 and the Mosin side-by-side. The shooter liked the Mosin better. I have never fired one, but am considering adding one to the collection.

Re: Mosin Nagant

Many that bad mouth the Mosin's have never shot one. The Finns did a bang up job in getting them to shoot back when. Hornady makes a fine .311 150gr that I shoot in the M44 out to 500yds The 91/30 works very well with Sierra's #2315 (.311 174gr smk) on to 700, (longest I've pushed it so far) I'm using Re 15 in the M44 an Varget in the 91/30

At the old Military Bolt gun match's at Knob Creek, every once in a while a Mosin will make a showing, the reload is slow(hits vs total time, scoring)but they hit just as many targets as other vintage bolt sticks.

Re: Mosin Nagant

If you like your 91/30, you should try one that has been modified by the Finns with a heavy barrel. The Finn's were vastly outnumbered when the red army invaded during the winter war of 1939. They managed to win several victories with these modified Mosins and one of the best made submachine guns of WWI, the Suomi. In the 3 months of the War, the red army lost nearly 400,000 while the Finn's only lost about 27,000. This probably led Hitler to vastly underestimate the effectiveness of the red army and launch Operation Barbarossa that led to his eventual downfall. I have 3 that are all more accurate that my Mosin 91's, 91/30's, and M44's. The bolt action mausers are similar, but of course none compare to the Garand...
