Hey guys!

Still trying to find out what rifle and caliber are the best for 1000 yard+ target shooting. Might stick with a Sako TRG in .300 win. mag., but I would really like to build myself a remington 700 capable of that, most likely in 7mm rem. mag.
Besides the stock, the trigger and the scope, I would need a custom barrel. I would like the Schneider barrel the USMC puts on their M40A3 rifles, but I have not been able to find it anywhere, plus its a .30 cal, I want the 7mm.
Are there any really good match-grade, heavy-profile barrels for the remington 700, that come in 7mm caliber?

Re: Most accurate 7mm barrel for Remington 700?

Any of the top name companies can make a 7mm tube for your rifle.
Schnieders website is under construction, but you can give them a call.

If you want a schnieder, get a schnieder.

Google is your friend. Schnieder barrels.

Also worth considering:
Hart, Benchmark, Shilen, Pac-nor, McGowan, lothar-walther and the list goes on.

Re: Most accurate 7mm barrel for Remington 700?

I have been very pleased with all of the Benchmark Barrels i have had they all shoot fantastic and clean easy. there 7mm 3 groove 9 twist shoots fantastic.

Re: Most accurate 7mm barrel for Remington 700?

ive always bought shelin barrels. the reason ive used them is my first barrel was a shelin and i was happy with it and saw no reason to change. if i did change i doubt i would notice much diffrence one way or the other. its just personal preferance.

So the barrel used on a Rossi rifle is the equivalent quality wise of a schnieder?

When it comes to custom barrels, the differences are little to non-existent. It all comes down to who you want to buy from and who you received your advice from. You cannot tell the difference in performance between a

Barltlein
Schneider
Obermeyer
Krieger
Rock
Broughton
Douglas
Shilen

It doesn't matter who you pick as they will all perform well beyond expectation.

Barrels are barrels.

Re: Most accurate 7mm barrel for Remington 700?

You made a blanket statement of "barrels are barrels", that is not necesarily true.
It is also true that all custom barrels are not created equally.
ER Shaw barrels are, by definition, custom barrels. I think you will not find very many of these on the firing lines of any major matches where accuracy is paramount.

Now, if you say a custom MATCH grade barrel, I would concur. There is really no difference in the performance of any of the custom MATCH barrels.

I'm not going to argue semantics with you. The genre of barrels was implied as I believe it is obvious to 99.9% of the people here that we're comparing ONLY custom match grade barrels.

When he (the OP) says things like

"I'm going to need a custom barrel" and "Are there any really good match-grade, heavy-profile barrels for the remington 700, that come in 7mm caliber?"

Why do I have to qualify that I'm not including factory Remington barrels?

So Barrels are Barrels.

Re: Most accurate 7mm barrel for Remington 700?

You are no fun.

I like bandying about semantics.

I also tend to be very literal when interpreting things.
I goes back to what I used to do for a living.

Re: Most accurate 7mm barrel for Remington 700?

Any of the top barrel makers are going to deliver a quality product that will shoot. I have had experience with Kreiger, Rock Creek, Lilja, and McGowan. They all are doing what I expected out of them. I would recommend spending some time on each of the top manufactures sites that we are all listing for you. There you will get more info about contours and twist rates that you might like. If that doesn't get your question answered, call them.

I tried it once and banned myself. Then I couldn't get back on to see if I sneaked in with another user name and couldn't check. So I had to log back on, unban myself, and then check to see if I tried to come back on while I was banned.

Re: Most accurate 7mm barrel for Remington 700?

I hear Lowe's makes a hell of a barrel! Only downside is your going to have to drill ya a hole, thread it, chamber it, and well pretty much everything....

Re: Most accurate 7mm barrel for Remington 700?

I shop by two things: cut rifled?? & wait time.

(Not that buttoned barrels are bad. But a couple of companies that button barrels have shallower lands which decreases useful barrel life.)

Re: Most accurate 7mm barrel for Remington 700?

I'm new to bolt guns, but not new to using good barrels and "a barrel IS a barrel" when you start talking the likes of Krieger, Shilen Select, etc. I do think that cut rifling is worth looking for. I'd just get the barrel that I could get the quickest.

I was recently shopping for a new barrel for my 700. I wound up getting a Krieger because they had what I wanted in stock and I had it in less than a week. It could just as easily have been a Shilen or Rock, although I do have to admit that my smith is a big fan of Krieger and that's what most of the guys in my neck of the woods shoot.

Re: Most accurate 7mm barrel for Remington 700?

Like Mike "Tried" to say, pick one they (The well known barrel makers) all make good barrels. When I first started getting my rifles rebarreled I let my smith pick the barrel. The smith is the one you need to pick carefully!!

Re: Most accurate 7mm barrel for Remington 700?

I think I have had all of the top barrels but Rock. I would like to have one his as well. So far the standouts have been Kreiger, Schneider, Bartlein and Hart. The dissapointments have been Shilen and Lilja.

Re: Most accurate 7mm barrel for Remington 700?

Regarding Hart barrels, I concur. Absolute tack drivers. The recent International Benchrest top scores are still packed with their name. Hart has been around so long that the name is almost an institution.
