I am wondering what is the most important upgrade(s) for a stock RRA I will not be competing, but shoot prone with scope and some bench but mostly just prone out to 600 yds. I am on a budget but mainly meaning I can't buy it all at once just a piece at a time and I do want top quality upgrades so what are your ideas for upgrades that actually are significant improvements not just "tacti cool" as so many guys say on this site and what order would you do for them in
What I have now
Stock RRA lower
Two stage RRA trigger
Magpul CTR stock
16" air gauged SS 1:8 barrel
RRA upper and BCG
Bushnell 6500 2.5-16x42 mil dot
Burris extreme tactical extra high rings

Re: Most important upgrades

Have you shot it yet? Are there things about it that don't work for you? Accuracy OK? Recoil manageable? A bipod might help but not everyone wants one on their gun.

"Improvements" are subjective. If it's shooting well for you and accurate then I wouldn't change anything until you find something that you need that will help YOU shoot it better. Otherwise, why change anything?

Re: Most important upgrades

Thanks for the feed back and yes I've shot it and actually love the gun that is why I want to start investing into it. I hover right Round 1 moa and have only really shot 100-200 yds and want to start extend further. I read alot of posst on different triggers stocks barrels and other upgrades and was looking at what would be the most beneficial to start with to improve the function and accuracy of the rifle as well as my ability to shoot in regards to equipment I feel it should shoot better and I understand a lot of it is the shooter

Re: Most important upgrades

Trigger time.. trigger time.. trigger time. After 5000 rounds you'll know what you need.. if anything. Nice setup.

Re: Most important upgrades

Shoot it .....shoot it.... shoot it!!! I do recommend the new Wilson Combat TTU-3G Trigger. I find a great trigger can smooth out minor variations. If you reload you may want to optimize your load for the rifle before you do any tweaks

Re: Most important upgrades

It sounds to me like your rifle has all that it needs, except maybe a decent bipod and a solid method of attaching it to your rifle. Which handguards do you have right now?

Although I'm not a big fan of the RRA two stage trigger, they are pretty nice, up until they fail. I've found the failure point to be some where around the 2500 round point.

For now, I'd say that you need to invest in some good ammunition or a method of rolling your own. Then, practice, A LOT.

Re: Most important upgrades

Like TonyAngel said...from the list you're showing, I would say the MOST important upgrade would be another 5-800 worth of reloading equipment.

Being able to roll your own makes ALL the difference when accuracy is in play.

Re: Most important upgrades

You didn't say how it shot now. If it's not that great and the barrel is a RRA factory tube, I'd go to a custom barrel. The trigger can be re-worked to be crisp on the 2nd stage with minimal weight reasonably too. Also you didn't list your forearm. If it's not free-floated, get a free-float tube on it.

Re: Most important upgrades

I guess other than stating accuracy ( around 1 moa ) I don't really know what to say about how it shoots I don't have much to compare it to it's the only ar I own and I dont have a quality bolt gun to compare it to just a 1966 REM 742 30-06 which is apples to oranges but i love the gun the 2stage is nice but seems a little stiff in the final stage I feel quite often Im pulling the shot trying to break the trigger but again I don't have much to compare it to. The hand guard is free float mid length quad rail and right now I've been using the grip pod as my bipod when I don't use a front bag and I do have a full reloading set up which is what I've been doing while contemplating any upgrades is getting some loads developed to start working up an accurate load for this rifle I have about 4 powder to 6 bullet type configurations and wonder if I start working these up will my data be skewed due to a lower quality trigger, stock, barrel, etc.... But I do thoroughly agree with the many previous post that I DO NEED MORE TRIGGER TIME and that will be the best data I just thought I would pick your brains to see what you thought so I don't need to put 5000 rounds down before I learn what you already know cause as they say good men usually stand on the shoulders of greater and wiser men

Re: Most important upgrades

I like 2 stage triggers but for precision shooting, I don't like anything with a final pull (single or 2stage) of more than 2.5 - 3lbs. Some say this is to light for hunting, but if you practice safe technique, I feel that's bogus.
A lighter trigger will almost definitely shrink groups. Even you just go with lighter springs or a good polish on your 2 stage, it may help.

Re: Most important upgrades

At this point, you could probably go to a UBR or EMOD for a better "bench gun" stock.

What muzzle device are you running? Still an A2 birdcage? A quality muzzle device - especially a brake - can help with accuracy in several ways.
