Mothball Fleet

Re: Mothball Fleet

Good place to fish for sturgen. The glomar used to be out there too. It was a ship that was built I believe in the late 60 or early 70s. It's mission was retrieval of a sub that belonged to the user.

Sad to see such amazing pieces of our history going to waste

. How much would it honestly cost to keep those up in good condition, and let people tour them? I would rather my money go to that, than a bunch of subjects that will get me banned for saying.

On a side note, its to bad they didnt fire on of them up and take her out for a sping, and fire off a few of those huge guns!:)

If your talking about the Glomar Explorer, that ship was built by Howard Hughes for the US Government. Cover story was exploration of deep ocean, real mission from conception, retrieve a down Russian Sub w/ Nukes still aboard.

They did retrieve nukes, but the operation did not go as planned, from the get go.

Re: Mothball Fleet

Yes Gunfighter, the cover story was "to retrieve/harvest 'manganese nodules' from the exceedingly deep ocean floor" supposedly placed there through "deep volcanic activity".

Wherein-fact, the way things worked out, wasn't as expected or intended, eh? The documentary was quite entertaining.

Re: Mothball Fleet

Oh the drama...I bet these guys work for a news paper some where. With all them "close calls" you'd think they might have been ex Navy Seals or something.

Re: Mothball Fleet

Either Nat Geo or the History channel had a documentary on it.
Needed a crazy genius with deep pockets to do it.

I wish we would bring the Mo and Jersey back out again.
Just think about the upgrades today!

Dad worked with a guy that got to hear those shells over his head many miles inland.

Re: Mothball Fleet

The documentary was a two-part series, and it was called:

"Azorian, The Raising Of The K129". Hope that helps. And for what it's worth, I too wish that they'd bring BB62 and 63 back into service. Putting them away was a mistake.

Yep, the Moon Pool, if memory serves. Lots of en-ovations on that bucket. The lifting pipe system was a stroke of genius that floated the cover story well. Hughes and his Hench men, were good at over coming the unthinkable. To bad most of his innovative work on the Spruce Goose was adopted/stolen by the Russians, for their low level sea skimming troop transport.

Id like to see CV 11 back in action. One of the best meals I ever had in uniform, was on that flat top.

Re: Mothball Fleet

I had no idea the sea shadow was there, I'd love to see the inside of it, but it looked locked down tight.

It is really sad to see those ships rotting away like that, waiting to go to the breakers.
