I know this has been asked to death around here, but I still don't understand why some of the bases are so much more expensive than opthers.
I was looking on the Midway site- I get a discount so your price may be different, and found an aluminum EGW base for $32.99 and a steel EGW for $57.00. On the other hand I saw a Badger for $139.00 and Nightforce for $114.00.
There doesn't seem to be as much of a gap in ring prices. On Midway the EGW rings are $104.99 and the Badger are $149.99.

Do the more expensive bases hold the scope down on the barrel better?

Is there any advantage to going with a steel base instead of an aluminum base? I know many say the aluminum will work, but is steel better?

Re: Mount question

Steel is stronger, and will withstand more abuse. So yeah, I'd say its better, especially if its a working gun. Someone posted a you-tube vidio of a .50 cal under recoil, and the base, scope flex was incredible.
