Guys,

Looks like I will be going out to the Rock Island Illinois area to work. My contract work in Afghanistan is u; I have been in the area for almost 10 months now. I know things will not be like my current home location of Nevada. So far what I have read is not good, what am I up against? The bulk of my stuff I will just leave it in Nevada. What ranges can I expect to find or is public land available to shoot on? Thanks in advance for the replies.

Re: Moving to Rock Island Illinois area

Davenport Iowa is right across the river from Rock Island. Iowa might be a better choice for a residence than Illinois, firearm friendly wise. I'm sure the "locals" here on the borad will chime in.

If you like Rueben sandwiches, the Belgian Village Inn in Moline (right next to RI) can't be beat.

Re: Moving to Rock Island Illinois area

It's not THAT bad. Beats California.

Can't have anything that would be on Form 4. Good ranges are pretty few and far between. I would make friends with someone who likes to shoot and owns a lot of land. But you might be all right being in that corner of the state.

No CCW either. So if you insist on having it, you might want to get in good with your local sheriff.

At least you've got the armory, Springfield, Les Baer, and Rock River close by to keep you company.

There is no such thing in areas like yours with good farm land (most of IL). If it's rural, it's either private property or state park. Property is serious shit in IL.

Haven't been back to Davenport in YEARS but I do recall it was pretty darned flat back there...and there's a river there...LOL

Might be a bit of a drive but there's a LOT of farmland out there.

And one of the all time BEST firearm museums is right there on Rock Island - had to make that trip!

PS - Julians Castle - great steaks, awesome castle like environment if it's still up....(Did I spell it right)

Re: Moving to Rock Island Illinois area

Rock Island is an interesting town. I just hope you have enough tattoos to blend in with the locals.

The area is known as the Quad Cities (Moline & Rock Island in Illinois and Davenport and Bettendorf in Iowa) and isn't too bad if you're into boating waterfowling etc. In addition to the other manufacturers mentioned previously, Rock River Arms is also in the area.

If you want to bring in exotic toys or have a CCW, plan on living in Iowa. Illinois government is dominated by Chicago democrats and the second amendment doesn't extend to Cook County so why should any one outside of Chicago need or want a gun?

I have to travel thru Rock Island once a quarter and unless you absolutely have to live there, my advice would be to find a home on the Iowa side of the river.

Re: Moving to Rock Island Illinois area

As soon as you become a resident of the state you will fall under the FOID act. SO you will have a catch 22 going if you move in state with firearms. I recomend if you do bring firearms with you, tuck them away, get your foid app filed and sit tight and wait for your FOID card. Here is a link where you can read up on it and get a jump on things.

If you need any help with it shoot me a pm and I will see what I can do.

Re: Moving to Rock Island Illinois area

take the Iowa side if you have a choice No C3 stuff without SOT and a lot less tax and bullshit. PM if you have any questions I got some friends in that area that work for J DEERE

Re: Moving to Rock Island Illinois area

I use to live in a small town 15-20 min north of Moline. Live on the Iowa side if you can. As others have said there is no public land so be careful where you shoot. FOID is a PIA to deal with. IMO I would just live on the Iowa side if possible.
