Moving to Southern MD

I finally found a job in my specialized field, but it's in MD. Any hiders have suggestions on where to live? I have been told La Plata is better than Waldorf, but that was one person's view. I had thought about commuting from VA, but the drive would be a slow death.

Do not move to MD at any cost. Bad gun laws only getting worse. Ridiculous laws on whats banned and not banned (impacting what you can bring with you), can only purchase low cap mags in-state, upcoming bill to ban possession of >10rd mags without a grandfather clause, etc.. Just don't do it. Not to mention the income tax, piggy back local income tax that people fail to mention, and then there's real estate taxes.

If you’re looking in SoMD, Central VA becomes an option with travel on Route 301. You get a lower total tax situation (even with their property taxes) and much friendlier gun situation.

I’d stay away from Waldorf, it’s quickly becoming PG county lite. I grew up in St. Mary’s, about 45 minutes from Indian head. You could always commute from the dahlgren area if you don’t want to deal with the Maryland gun laws.

If you could find a place just over the river in Dalgren Va it would be about a 45 minute drive, a bunch, but doable. I think in that part of MD. you will find better attitudes toward firearms than up around Rockville, College Park, and the Swamp.

I lived in Columbia for a while and never got used to it. Commuted from there to Rockville on the otherside of DC on 395. The traffic was insane. The people were a bit too much for someone who grew up in the Midwest too. The first time I said hi to a lady in the grocery store she looked at me like I was going to stab her. In my case I also got sticker shock on the COL difference.

The upside was all of the historical stuff around and the fresh seafood.

I'm a non-traditional graduate student, who at the ripe age of 40+ just finished my doctorate. I'm viewing this as a strategic move to have the choice of where to live in the future. Pay as you go I guess. Across the 301 in VA seems like it may be the place for a while.

I lived in NOVA as a kid, there is nothing more I would like to do than never go back, but unemployment is not an option.

I lived in the Alexandria and Springfield areas for 5 years then near Waldorf for 5 years. It has its good and bad spots just like anywhere else. I bought a house in Berry Hills Manor and it was a good community if you’ve got a young family.

There’s an invisible line somewhere between Waldorf and LaPlata that’s like going from the back of the bus to the front of you get my drift. That’s not necessarily a good thing tho, lot of white trash in LaPlata.

I commuted from Waldorf to Alexandria daily. 18 miles took me an hour and a half each way. That shit got old quick. I got out all together 3 years ago and never looked back. Money isn’t everything and Western PA is a good place to call home.

Like others have said, MD is staunchly liberal and gun laws suck. They find every possible opportunity to get into your wallet. The only thing I miss is the bomb ass BBQ you can find in some of the Sunday morning roach shacks down off 210. Chicken, ribs, & chicken... Nomz.

Last year I worked overseas for a company based out of Arkansas but I'm a Virginia resident, and I got the fine privilege of paying income taxes to both VA and AR despite not being physically present in either. Same with my girlfriend, she worked overseas and paid a shit ton to VA in taxes. Now we're moving to Wyoming (no income tax state) next week and telling them all to suck a fat one.

As far as MD, my ex moved my kids to the eastern shore a few years back. Their gun laws alone, along with their outrageous taxes and being an impoverished region, is why I'm in Virginia instead of being close to my kids. I definitely agree with the above to not buy property yet either, unless you need to reinvest property sale profits from the move to keep from paying excessive taxes. My lady and I have rented for the last few years here because we wanted to be more flexible in being able to bail from here. Your own situation may be different, but now that it's time to go we're definitely happy we don't have to worry about selling a home in a slumping real estate market with a housing glut in our region.

A nice country commute is a good way to both wake up and decompress on both ends of work.

An interesting aside.

I was in Columbia one evening, dusk, and needed directions. I saw an old guy walking his dog so pulled over to ask...he seemed really nervous. As he flipped his arm over I notice a series of about 8 numbers tattoed to the inside of his forearm. I realized what they were and met his gaze with compassion, he lit right up and gave me the info I needed.

This!! So part of me wants to encourage the OP to come to MD so that we can recruit another pro 2A person to help fight off the tide of stupid...but the compassionate side of me wouldn't want to wish the OP to be subjected to MD's progressive agenda. Seriously, I'd consider commuting from Northern VA (even with the hellish traffic).
