Hey all, first post here after lurking a while...

I recently purchased a SPS Tactical with the idea of getting my feet wet with some long range shooting. While it will DEFINITELY be used to punch paper, I'm also mulling the idea of using it for hunting. Before making the purchase, I read constant complaints over the stock, which upon receiving the rifle are well deserved. I'm planning on getting a new stock, and was wondering what you guys could recommend that would work well for both shooting off the bench as well as in the field? I like the texture of the Hogue, as well as the weight. However, I know I will be needing to replace it to tap into the potential of the rifle. What say you?

Thanks!

Both great recommendations for target shooting and hunting. If you want a lower budget option, consider Bell and Carlson, either their A3 tactical or M40 version.

Re: Multi-Purpose Rem 700 stock...?

Put my FIL's into a HS Precision stock form an LTR, nice little handy rifle. I have an A5 on mine and no issues hunting with it at all. Yes its heavy but worth the pack most of the time.

LTR from HS Precision
Lite Tac from B&C
HTG from MCM

All good choices

A good friend of mine bought an SPS with the tupperware stock about 4 months ago that's consistently printing under MOA and he intends to just keep the stock, I approve of his decision.

My SPS is liking the McMillan m40a1 sniperfill, but it's a little heavy for offhand.

Re: Multi-Purpose Rem 700 stock...?

I have had my "Tact" for about a month now. I stiffened up the stock by cutting pieces of fiberglass matting and filling the channel with fiberglass. I did not fill it up enough to touch the barrel. In the mean time I found a HS Percision stock from a 5r on this forum for $200 delivered. I am waiting on it now. Check out Ebay as there are several like new takeoffs from PPS and 5r's. This is the same as the M24 stock and has the full aluminum frame.

Thanks guys, I appreciate all of the responses.

I'll look over the stocks suggested so far, and as far as budget goes.... $500 maybe? Its not something I need NOW, so if I found something I had to have I could wait a while to build up some funds.

Re: Multi-Purpose Rem 700 stock...?

I bought a 700 LTR (HS Precision) stock from a member here a while back and dropped my .223 Tactical in it. It works really well with the short heavy barrel.
If I ever replace it I'll get a McMillan M40 HTG.

Re: Multi-Purpose Rem 700 stock...?

The McMillan Remington Varmint pattern is my idea of a true "dual-purpose" stock. I have a couple of them with factory Remington SPS-T and SPS-V barreled actions. The short forend is great with the 20" barrel and is not too narrow or too wide. Comb is relatively high and the palm swell is nice also. It's LTR-ish in size/compactness, but the ergos are better.

The black stock is a 20" .308win and the tan is a lefty 23" 243win.

Re: Multi-Purpose Rem 700 stock...?

My opinion.

If cost is considered I like the used take-off HS Precision stocks like the LTR & PSS offerings as they can be had for in the $200 range. Drop in simple and easy to bed if you wish. And if you want to upgrade your floor-plate grab a Williams and it's drop in too.

My second recommendation and my all around favorite is the McM HGT & HTG w/adjustable cheek. I've had both of these and love them for easy go-to all arounders in my book.

I have an McM A5 on order so will see how this fits into the mulit-purpose roll for the next stick.
