    Vegas Baby!
I've been going round and round about whether to get a brake for my 20" SPS-T. But I'm just having a really hard time being able to see my hits no matter how hard I try to get behind the gun properly. And rapid shots during Tac comps are really difficult because the gun is so light compared to many of my competitors.

So, what is a good brake if I want to keep from having to turn down the barrel much at all and keep a slim in-line profile with the barrel. Suggestions?

Re: Recommend a brake for an SPS-T .308

I like the look and feel of the surefire brakes that come on the new M40A5 I think it is. I've shot a number of rifles with that brake and it works well, isn't that loud and keeps the barrel pretty slim.

Re: Recommend a brake for an SPS-T .308

Will the barrel length have to get cut down to thread it, or will the gunsmith just start threading as is?

OK, been searching around and it looks like the Badger FTE is the more easily removable of what out there. I assume all the others also can be screwed on/off but that they are not considered true QD. Correct? The Badger FTE looks chunky, but I do like the versatility to be able to go back and forth with a can when I get one eventually. Am I thinking about this right, because I honestly and not sure all the ins and outs of muzzle brakes and what it means to take one of the more integral looking ones like the surefire, thruster or vais on and off.

    Thanks for the help!

Probably not a bad idea. I'll have to check around to see if any of my local smith's do good work on precision rifles and I'll probably get the brake and re-crown done. If I had to send it off, who has the best combo of good work and decent turn around time? I would imagine the big names like GAP will take a while to get back...

Mark Gordon of Short Action Customs installed a Badger Thruster for me, turn around was a week.

Check out the Smith Enterprises web site for their USCG brake (it has the QD feature for a can). They have video of an M-14 being fired from the shoulder on full auto and the rifle shows NO muzzle rise at all. I recently ordered one directly from Ron Smith himself and had my 26" Savage varmint barrel threaded 5/8 X 24 by the smith he recommended here in PHX, cost $75 and included a recrowning. I had 2 barrels threaded and got them back in 10 days. Have not shot this yet, but Ron related about a sample that SIG tested recently and they rated it the MOST effective brake they have seen yet. Ron and his wife do a great job supporting our troops overseas and should recieve more credit for their generosity.

Thanks, I'm looking at SACs pricing page and wanted to make sure what I'm looking at. Under muzzlebrake install, I assume that includes barrel threading as well, right? So all I would need is the MB install and the recrown service, not a seperate barrel thread?

Re: Recommend a brake for an SPS-T .308

I recommend the Thruster. It works really well on my .308. Knocks the recoil down to next to nothing. It can easily be turned down to your barrel contour.

Ok, perfect - that answers my question then on which one to get. Trying to stick with removeable. Thanks!

Re: Recommend a brake for an SPS-T .308

One last question.... If I got the barrel threaded for the Badger FTE brake, do I still need a gunsmith to install it correctly the 1st time? Or is it such that as long as the barrel is threaded properly, I can just screw the brake on and go shoot?

    Reaper,
Contact George at Precision Shooting Sports. He designed a really nice muzzle brake and installed on my .260. Its smaller than the FTE and kinda resembles an AI. Spins on, no need to time, easily adjustable. Don't have any close up pics right now, but its awesome. Give him a call, he can email you a pic.

I will, thanks. I assume it threads on a standard 5-28 thread pattern?

    For real?

I was thinking of getting a Lawton Machine brake for my 700P and it looks similar to the thruster.

But im also getting a threaded cap as well.

I was under the assumption I could remove the brake easily for F class... is this not the case?

Re: Recommend a brake for an SPS-T .308

I purchased a holland style brake from hide member Ross (username RWS), for $40. He will answer emails the same day and shipped my brake to my specs the same day. I ordered one with a 1/8 inch cantaliver that covers a 308 crush washer that I ordered from Brownell for less than $4. That way I did not have to pay a smith to time it. Works great. I don't know how to post pics but you can go to the link below to see pictures.

Re: Recommend a brake for an SPS-T .308

I find the recoil on a .308 Win tactical rifle to be so small as to hardly be noticable. I find the noise of a MB to be huge and annoying. I would try getting square behind the rifle and getting a good, firm grip on stock, forend. Firm cheek weld, firm shoulder mount and that little .308 will not even twitch. JMO. Is the rifle kicking up or sideways? That will tell you where you need to focus.
