First, there are so many choices for muzzle breaks how much of a difference is there between them. Also what is the deal with having a barrel threaded for brake. After having a brake put on can you take it on and off. What is the deal with having it tuned? What should I expect to pay to have someone put a break on my rifle? I have the MTU contour barrel are there breaks that won't fit flush to such a large barrel?

Re: Muzzle Brake Questions

I know a Hollands break will fit that contour. you buy them in a certain size range thats inbetween your barrel diameter and the smith contours the back end to match your barrel.

Ive had good luck with the holland on a .243AI and 6,5x47lap.

Re: Muzzle Brake Questions

Holland make a great break. Have one on 30-06 pistol shoots like a 38 now. Also Macs guns in WY builds a great one nice guy to deal with to. I have it on a 6x284 and its a pussy cat to shoot.

Re: Muzzle Brake Questions

Huge difference in brakes based on design. I had fired a 80 hole .50bmg windrunner and it kicked like a mule. I have the shark style brake on my M96 and it works very well for everyone that's not shooting right next to you.
Not sure I understand the question on "Also what is the deal with having a barrel threaded for brake."
Yes you can take them off and on but you shouldn't and it should be difficult so it does not inadvertently unscrew itself and in turn screw you big time with a brake strike. If I get your question right, it needs to be "clocked" so that it does not direct gasses in the incorrect direction. Example would be to the ground giving lift to the barrel, a cloud of dust and a hardy high ho silver. Cost? Never had one installed, always had them already on rifles I bought. Oh forgot about Magna-Porting my Desert Eagle .44 that was about $125 shipped about 15 years ago

Re: Muzzle Brake Questions

I have the Score High tactical brake on my 700p .300. Very happy. Fit and finish was top notch. Recoil reduction was great, .243ish Prices on his website.

There are so many you just need to pick one you like and go with it. Performance is similar on similarly designed brakes. I'm pretty fond of the ones made by RWS in the classifieds, but other options are the Badger Thruster, APA little bastard, JP makes a couple, and plenty more. Get one that doesn't have ports pointing down such as the Harrell's brake. They throw grass and dirt everywhere. The brakes need to be indexed to have the ports line up on your barrel. I assume that is what you mean by tuning. I put mine on with red locktite, but they can be removed if necessary. You can get a brake to fit pretty much any barrel. RWS makes one that is 1.25 and it can be tapered at the rear to match your barrel. Price is different everywhere. To thread and index a brake it's going to cost you $100 and up most places plus the cost of the brake. If you have someone local to do the job it would save you $20 shipping each way.

Re: Muzzle Brake Questions

My rifle has not been threaded, does it matter what thread I get on the brake to take to a gunsmith? I'm going with the badger thruster. Does anyone have an opinion on that brake?

Re: Muzzle Brake Questions

It should not matter what the thread is.

The 'smith will likely cut the thread on a lathe and should be able to cut anything. He may chase it with a die afterwards (not necessary if the lathe is set up right and the tool is sharp... but some choose to do it.)

You might want to call your gunsmith in advance, though. If it has a metric thread (with a different angle) or similar, he might have a concern, but you can cut a threading tool to any angle.

It should be a very straightforward job for any competent gunsmith.

Cheers,

Sirhr

Re: Muzzle Brake Questions

The very end of my barrel is .950 but about half an inch up it is .965. So does that mean that the badger thruster is going to be too small to fit flush with the barrel?
