ok so i sure this is a stupid question but do all muzzle breaks have to be installed by a gunsmith or are there some that simply just thread on like a silencer that i dont have to have the hole ( yeah i said hole) bored out for the proper caliber?
If the barrel is threaded and the brake is the proper caliber, there's no reason you can't do it yourself. However, you will probably need shims, peel washers or crush washers to clock it, to my knowledge those parts are only commonly availible for thread diameters common to ARs and the like, and some may find them unsightly. So a smith could be in order, depends on your skill and ambition.
ETA: you'll also want a good vise and a proper barrel block.
Assuming your barrel is already threaded, you can purchase a break with a locking collar screw. I'm no 100% sure, but I think RAD Customs makes such a break. If your installing one such as a Vias with holes all around, then timing isn't really an issue. The bore on some breaks does need to be enlarged for specific calibers such as the Holland breaks. If its a KDF, they will make it to you specs like diameter, caliber, and thread pitch. Hope that helps a little.
The problem is most barrels aren't threaded. Installation is not that expensive and worth expense. There are a couple of them that clamp on, but I would stay away from them.

Yep, Jason's breaks are the best in terms of recoil reduction.
PM me if you want his #.
His breaks can be ordered in all the common calibers and thread pitches.
They come with a precision shim kit so that they don't have to be timed by a gunsmith....of course you can have them installed by a smith if you don't want to use the shim kit...
