Bought this Savage factory barrel from Numrich new. It has a small area of concern on the muzzle. Is this fixable by a gunsmith or is the barrel toast? I plan on getting a muzzlebrake put on anyway.

Re: Muzzle Crown ?

The bevel is intended to avoid a jag from nicking the edge when being pulled back through.

11* is the "quote" best relief angle as proven by the Dept of the Army back in the 1950's.

Several smiths (myself included) strongly advocate the "razor edge" crown so long as the end user has the sense to be careful with it when cleaning.

Good luck on getting it fixed OP. Be interesting to see before/after on your plot sheets.

What is the typical crown under a muzzle brake?

Re: Muzzle Crown ?

Just a heads up, I recently had my Savages crown look like that. Sent it to a local smith and $30 later, I had an 11 degree crown and more accuracy in the rifle. I would try to get it recrowned if I were you.

Re: Muzzle Crown ?

Took the barrel to Bill's Custom Automatics in Shelby Ms yesterday. For 75 bucks he's going to thread the barrel, recrown, and index the brake, not too bad. He's also going to take the old barrel off put this one on and headspace it. Then he's going to blast it all with Alum Oxide so I can duracoat it. If I ever get my stockade woodchuck, I'm going to bed the action and put it all together. Hopefully I can get all this done and have time to do some load developement before November deer season rolls around.
