Re: My 300 WIN MAG is Finished Finally

Thanks guys....I made it to the local 1000 yard range today and will I guess you can say I am ruined. There were some guys there that asked if I wanted to shoot there rifle and of course I jumped right in and on my 3 rd shot got to ring some metal.Although it wasn't my gun it was a cool feeling and now I have something to look forward too when I get mine dialed in.One of the shooters was William Roscoe of LA Precision rifles and they were all willing to answer any questions I had and hope to get to spend some time with those guys they are the real deal.

Re: My 300 WIN MAG is Finished Finally

Great to see you have that range nearby, Andy. You've got just the rifle for that range. Have a great time dialing her in.

Take lots of pics with your first range report!

Re: My 300 WIN MAG is Finished Finally

I got to the range this afternoon and got to do some load tesing.(100 yards) 3 shot groups

Hornady 208 gr. A-MAX .015 jump
RL-22
Remington brass
Federal GM215M Primer

This is my second time behind the gun and I still have alot of learning to do but let me know what you think.

Re: My 300 WIN MAG is Finished Finally

My next trip I will have some 5 round groups.Im still working on trigger control and tend to pull 2 out of 5 shots.LOL How long should I wait before each group is fired.I know alot depends on outside temp, wind, etc. but a roundabout number for waiting.

Re: My 300 WIN MAG is Finished Finally

Well I have always been a shotgun shooter and just starting to get into shooting rifles.Went and joined a local gun club yesterday that has 100-1000 yard range. When I built this gun the main purpose was I wanted to be confident out to 500 yards but after shooting 1000 yards with another members gun and ringing steel I think I may be trying to move more towards that eventually. But this rifle for now will double as my box stand deer rifle. That was the main purpose to get good at further distances to make good clean shots.

Ok. I would suggest trying your loads 500 yds to see what works best. Usually anything that groups well at 100 yds will group well at longer ranges too. But, as with anything, there are exceptions to that rule. For example, my 260 Rem loves 140 gr Sierra Match King's at 100 yards. If I do my part it's an easy 0.1 MOA load. It also likes 140 AMAX at 100 yds, just not as much - 0.2 MOA. But at 600 yards, the AMAX's group better (about 1.5 inches vs. 2.8 inches). Both loads use the same powder, same charge, same primers, and both are about 0.010" off the lands. So, it's definitely worth while verifying at longer ranges. If you intend to shoot at game at 500 yards, I would be certain that you can place 10 rounds inside a 10" circle at that range without fail from field positions.

All the best

Re: My 300 WIN MAG is Finished Finally

Did you do skip 65 grains? Also, were you aiming at the center of each orange target? I ask because on your 64.5 load you are about 1 inch or more to the right and the 65.5 load is about 2" left. Are you adjusting scope?

When I load develop I start at .5 grains then move to .3 grains. Also, within a couple grains my shots will all hit in the same general area but some groups will be smaller than others.

Re: My 300 WIN MAG is Finished Finally

Yes I did skip 65.My reloading manual had the min. load at 62.5 so I just went up 1 grain and stopped at the max load. The only help I have had is reading SH so I'm just starting to get my feet wet in this long range shooting. If you can help I will be more then glad to listen what you guys have to say and really appreciate what information I have got so far.And yes you are correct I was adjusting the scope and the reason for that was because I was trying to keep all the loads on the same paper and not over run another group. It probably was a mistake on my part and shouldn't have messed with anything and just put up another target.

Re: My 300 WIN MAG is Finished Finally

That would be nice if 64.5 and 65.5 shot to the same point. If so then 65 would be great. You could sling a powder charge of 65 without being super accurate. That would save some time on loading. Nice rifle, love the 208.

Re: My 300 WIN MAG is Finished Finally

Im going to get some more worked up this week and try 64.5 and 65.5 without messing with the scope.LOL I have another box loaded but I used H4831SC that I have to try also.Maybe I'll be able to find a good load out of them.So once I get the powder charge I like do I then start to play the distance to the lands?

Re: My 300 WIN MAG is Finished Finally

If 64.5 and 65.5 shoot to the same point then I would just use 65 gr. Then load .010 long and .010 shorter and see if there is a difference. If no difference then split the middle. This will give you a load that is not picky and you wont have to spend as much time reloading. Have you tried H1000? It is my favorite for the 300 win mag. I like the temp stability of hogdon powder.

Re: My 300 WIN MAG is Finished Finally

I haven't got to try the H1000 yet. When I went to get some they were out.I looked in the new hornady book with the 208 amax and it wasnt listed so how do you figure min and max?

Re: My 300 WIN MAG is Finished Finally

Yeah I saw some rings like mine saturday and they were oppisite of mine but when I asked they didnt really have an answer. What is the reason for the 6 bolt on the front?

That's how the USMC rings were made for their M40A3' and 5's.
Its just a traditional way. More ring on the scope, for less movement under recoil. Guess it doesnt matter its just what most people are used to seeing.

You'd win 99% of matches shooting like that. Any targets to post?
