Yep, we have some work to do until he's ready for a .338LM TRG-42. He just turned 4 a few days earlier so he has time.

That was a good day, the women were shooting skeet and the kids were shooting 22's. Too bad fishing only yielded perch, a trout or salmon on the smoker would have been perfect way to end the day.

I can wait for the day I can take my son out and watch him shoot my rifles. Right now I see his eyes open wide when I take them out of the safe.

ahh the joys of being a father...

Appleseed is a program to teach Americans proper marksmanship. I think they are a fantastic way to get the "younger generation" into shooting.

If you are willing to bring them to the range and spend money getting a rifle for them to shoot, then I would imagine you'd also be willing to bring them to an Appleseed event.

If you're interested, which I would hope you are, then here is a link to their website:

http://www.appleseedinfo.org/

Or, being in Texas I'm sure there are several youth shooting clinics at your disposal. Just a thought...

Perhaps. I had my gun training in military so I picked up the bad habit of not wearing any eye protection. Only times I usually wear them is when shooting reloads. Of course they also teach you to keep your guns clean and well inspected to prevent accidents. Still that's a good point, I need to teach them (and myself) to wear eye (and ear) protection at all times.

Excellent work with the younguns!

Echo the comments on the eye pro -- you see a few guns blow up, primers blow, pistol rounds detonate on the ejector and it will give you eye pro religion.

May I ask why the stamp was not necessary ... Just curious.

Keep up the good work.

I bought the rifle brand new from a store back in 1994. It was at the time less than $200 including the rifle with threaded muzzle and the suppressor. I had not shot it in more than 10 years, ever since I moved to USA from Finland. It used to be my "long range" duck gun, I was able to pick them silently one by one beyond the reach of a shotgun.

In Finland the gun laws are much tougher but suppressors are unregulated, over the counter stuff. Also hunting with one is perfectly legal, as long as one uses ammunition that meets the minimum energy requirements meaning supersonics for larger game.

I would love to be able to pick up one of these over here in the USA:

.22LR suppressor, ~$50 shipped to your door, no paperwork needed: http://www.ahtihuvila.fi/tuotteet/asetarvikkeet/aanenvaimentimet/sak-aanenvaimennin-22-lr

Re: My $350 (total cost) suppressed rifle

You were able to import the suppressor without paying the stamp? I find this hard to believe.

Looks like a fun time with the kids though!

Re: My $350 (total cost) suppressed rifle

No, the gun and suppressor are still in Finland. (Great)grandpa turned 80 so I took the family for a visit. Took 4 scopes and a pair of binos with me, my brother picked what he wanted out of them and the rest were sold rather quickly since US/Japan made optics cost quite a lot over there. Brought back some Finnish artwork in form of a gunstock and couple of knives. I would not dare to bring a suppressor in the country, I'll just settle for the US made models.

No, just your regular hunting scopes. 2 Burris Euro Diamonds with illuminated #4, two Bushnell Elite's (6500 and 4200). Decent scopes for the money, especially the Burris. I thought about taking an EoTech but left it home since it's NV compatible.

Would mil-dot be considered "manufactured to military specifications"?

Re: My $350 (total cost) suppressed rifle

I can think of a way you could have a legal suppressed rifle in the US for $350, but it involves a crude home built Form 1, Marlin Model 60, and the scope would be over and above that price. Maybe a used model 60 with a Tasco 4x32 would make it possible.

Sadly the $200 tax + inflated dollar does really limit the potential for the $350 equal of this 1994 pricing.

I just bought 100 rounds of CCI standard velocity and it ran something like $8. In 1994 I was buying a brick of 500 for like $5.99 (again it's apples to oranges because a brick of CCI was probably $17.99 in 94, but it still represents inflation)

Re: My $350 (total cost) suppressed rifle

It looks like the $350.00 price has changed considerably!
<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Hinta: 280.00 €</div></div> (Price: $396.76), and that's just for the suppressor. Then again, that's the cost for a .243 or .300 Win Mag suppressor, not a .22 suppressor (Hinta: 30.00 € price: $42.51). Back in "94" before the introduction of the Euro in Finland prices were undoubtably less.

By the way Sami, What city/town does "grandpa" live in? Could he speak English to your kids?

Edit: Had to get the price for the .22 cal.

Still pretty good price considering something like that would be at least $700 over here.

It seems like the prices have gone 1:1 from Markka to Euro, although it has been over 10 years I think. It's probably 2:1 in reality. That would be a 300% increase (1e ~ 6mk). Crazy!!!

Now there is a big administrative fee on firearm purchases too. I think it is 70e now when it was about 3e back then (IIRC).

Most of the family has moved to Oulu now but my grandparents are still in Kemi. His English is ok but my son is learning all 3 languages; English, Finnish and Spanish. A bit slower to learn them all but doing it any other way would be foolish. It also helps me to learn Spanish and my wife to learn Finnish.

Re: My $350 (total cost) suppressed rifle

Wish our foreign exchange student we had 10 yrs ago would have brought some of his stuff over. If I remember right he came from the town of Inkoo just outside of Helsinki. It's fun shootin with the boys my oldest 6 loves his Savage 17hmr, and my 3 year old is just watching and waiting.

Re: My $350 (total cost) suppressed rifle

My first ever exchange student came from Kemi! He loved going out to shoot rabbits with my ruger 10/22. I also took him out deer hunting. He's now living in Jyväskylä. His last name is Välimaa.(Kemi is not a really such a <span style="font-style: italic">big</span> place afer all)

If you have a first name, I could tell if I know him. Depends largely on age group as I haven't lived in that area for nearly 20 years.

I went to Idaho for my exchange year and visited Utah quite a few times. I like the area but winter, well, one of the reasons why I left Finland. Idaho winter is even more harsh than Lapland winter.

Re: My $350 (total cost) suppressed rifle

Oh, sorry about that. His name is Jari. He came here about 30 years ago.

Speaking of suppressed .22s, I see some pretty reasonable deals on Huuto.net every now and again. Too bad that we can't get them sent to the U.S.
