Having fun doing headshots on a Larue resetting steel target

Re: My 6.8 tackdriver

Very nice fit and finish it looks flawless, Wilson produces fine products. Have you had a chance to check accuracy and velocity yet?

Re: My 6.8 tackdriver

Flash dot #9

I love that fact that the reticle is a clean thin crosshair at the center for doing tight groups.

A lot of illuminated reticle scopes had a black dot at the center that becomes illuminated. With the S&B, when you turn on the illumination a perfectly round small dot gets superimposed over the center.

You can go from daylight bright in direct sun to barely noticeable in very low light conditions..

In Germany, hunting at night for boars is a big part of their hunting, and it shows in this scope

I have killed a bunch of deer and hogs with the 6.8 and it absolutely does the job.

If I am hunting where I expect 400+ yard shots I take my 308 bolt action, most of the other time, I use the 6.8

Re: My 6.8 tackdriver

It's a work of art!
Seriously, the attention to detail and doing all the little things right is what makes a gun like this worth the extra cost.

The TTU trigger is perfection, ZERO travel, ZERO creep, the proverbial "glass rod" break, ZERO over travel and INSTANT reset.

Everyone that checks it out is like "oh wow, man, that's a NICE trigger" It's every bit as nice as the Jewell on my LTR.

All the machining work, the fit, the finish are all as good as it gets, this is truly a "lifetime" gun that can take the abuse of real hard use but be cherished and passed down ....

Re: My 6.8 tackdriver

I bit onto the 6.8mm early on as I saw it as a great hunting round and easy to remove the 223 upper and put the 6.8mm on and off to the woods. Great review of the rifle. I wish I could afford the optic that you have...may be one day.

I am up to six deer killed with the 6.8mm and this year I started using the 95GR TTSX from Barnes...awesome round for killing those brown furry creatures.

Re: My 6.8 tackdriver

Side profile pic of your would be nice, that seems to be an interesting hybrid rail on that stick. Part smooth paritally railed, how heavy is the rail?

Re: My 6.8 tackdriver

What kind of ammo are you using? Grains?
Do you reload for it at all?

I am building another AR and have everything but the barrel cuz I cant decide if I want to build another .223Rem or another 6.5 Grendel or go the 6.8 SPC route becuase I have yet to build or shoot one.

What kind of accuracy are you getting? Yardage?

I am thinking of purchasing a 6.8 Match barrel from Rainierarms.com after reading your post but would like to hear more.
I would be reloading for it also so it would be that much more fun!
Most likely going to be putting on a Weaver Grand Slam Tactical mil/mil scope on it for glass.

What length barrel should I get in 6.8? I am just going to be target shooting with it. 20"?

Here she is. Waiting to be barreled and glassed:

Re: My 6.8 tackdriver

if you are mainly going for target work and willing to go to a longer barrel, in all honesty, I would look at a 6.5 Grendel

The 6.8 is more of a hunting round and can get by with shorter barrels and I would limit ethical hunting distances to 400 yards max, usually I use it when I expect 300 and under shots, if hunting where I expect to need to be able to reach out farther I grab my 308 bolt

my handloads are 95g TTSX averaging 2850 FPS
will keep 10 in under .75" at 100 yards with a 6x scope

I can bang 12" steel plates at 750 with the SSA 115 OTM TAC load but that's not the reason I have the rifle... just fun to do it occasionally

Re: My 6.8 tackdriver

The round to the hogs brain housing seems to have stopped the clock.

I've taken similar shots that "barely" missed, and the result is very different - caused me to sell my first 6.8. I'm back at it though.

Nice animals.

How would you compare the Wilson upper to the ar15performance upper?

Re: My 6.8 tackdriver

Every thing I have shot with a 6.8 has been with a handloaded Barnes, 110 TSX and TTSX, 85 TSX and 95 TTSX

All have been clean shots..
Frankly haven't seen any real difference in effectiveness between any of them

Tomorrow I am going to a buddies place for a doe cull and will try the 110 AB SSA Tac loads as I got a bunch in to test.

On hogs:
I aim for behind the ear about 2" or just center up on the neck, never had one not go down instantly, kick and be done.

That pic is the exit side

They are both good uppers, not going to say anything bad about AR15s work... had 2 of them, both were good products and worked and Harrison was a good guy to work with.

On the, WC, I like having one complete package from one builder, I realize that ARs are basically tinker toys for big boys and I have built several from the ground up, but I like the "ok, stupid term here" "synergy" for lack of a better word of having the whole thing from one builder

Nice rig C. A beautiful pile of meat as well.

A 20" barrel is the max but with a muzzle device it will of course exceed that mark.
An 18" barrel however can meet the 20" mark with a carefully chosen muzzle device.
There is a potential 50fps difference between the 18 and 20 give or take. The biggest difference is seen between the 16 and 20 @ about 100 fps give or take.
I went with an 18" which gave me a happy medium. It is still very handy yet very accurate.
