I thought I would post a couple pics of my lately budget project. You might laugh and say what garbage but it works and gets the job done and I find it better then using tape and foam of some sort. I paid $4.99 for the plexiglass and $2.50 for the 2 bolts and Handles. I think I am going to look for smaller handles as these ones seem a little large for my liking.
Basically what I did was made a template on a piece of paper which was folded in half, then unfolded it and copied the stencil to the plexiglass, cut it out and drilled my 2 pilot holes on the rifle stock. took a heatgun and heated up the plexiglass and bent it over the stock to get the contour. Then I sanded the edges and cleaned it up. Sprayed it the same colour as my rifle. It was that simple. To be honest, I doubt you can find much better for the money. Here are the pics: Let me know what you think. SCROLL DOWN TO SEE SECOND SET OF LATEST PICS!

If it works. It works. Not much else matters. Looks good to me. Maybe paint those bolts. I agree the bolt handles could be smaller. Should be something out there that will work.

Whatever works - looks like a good idea. Unless you have a need to regularly change the height, you could use nylocks or acorn nuts, or even flush-fit tee nuts, to reduce the profile.

A lot of the stuff we like is expensive, sometimes absurdly so (and, yes, I understand product development and marketing and all those costs). Making your own makes you more familiar with your rifle and allows you to at least figure out exactly what you do and don't like before you shell out the cash for something fancier if you decide to ultimately take that route.

Re: My $7.50 Cheek-Rest/Comb

Looks pretty damn good to me, and for $7 I think it will do. I would probably get some smaller knobs as you stated. If I made another one, I would make it smaller, more custom for my cheek weld and lose alot of that extra material that isn't needed on the front and off side. May make some smooth circular cuts to streamline it making it smaller, but still fitted for your weld......basically just not as bulky.

Damn good job. I always think it's great when people use their head and make their own shit. That 10PC is a good rifle also. I have one in .223 and I love it. One of the better savages in my opinion.

Re: My $7.50 Cheek-Rest/Comb

Looks good, I'd round off the square lug on the caraige bolt though. That way the bolt head will fit flush to the pad. As far as finding some other twist nuts good luck ( repost if where u find them.... lol) . When I made one of my cheek rest( I bought one, starts with a "K" and copied it ). I came accross a short section of 1" round aluminum stock, cut to length i wanted, drilled taped for 3/8, and serrated it with a dremel, which took a while but it works and looks damn near factory. Just an idea.

Also try your local hardware store in the cabinet dept.

Re: My $7.50 Cheek-Rest/Comb **UPDATED**

Ok, well since it was so easy to make the first one, I went ahead and used the same template and only made holes where I need them to give it a cleaner look. I also grinded away two sides of the carriage bolts to make like a flat handle out of them. then I took the big handles I originally got and grinded the big triangle handles off and kind of made a hex nut shape. As you can see there far from perfect but still way better then the big handles. Lastly I painted the bolts and handle to match. Overall I think its much cleaner now, and for less then $8.00, what do you want?

Re: My $7.50 Cheek-Rest/Comb

Looks great... I made one out of 1" pvc cut length wise, used Bondo body filler to mold to stock over some wax paper. Drilled two holes on top, counter sunk for screws. Painted cheek weld to match stock. Came out pretty good for almost nothing.

I like to see others making their own stuff, puts the word custom to your rifle.

Re: My $7.50 Cheek-Rest/Comb

that's funny, the first one I made was out of PVC pipe as well, however the reason I didn't screw that on in from the top was because I was worried the bolts would interfere with my face.. yes I know you mentioned counter sinking them, however, I also wanted something I could quickly take off without any tools for ease of cleaning my rifle and such. When you have a cheekrest, it usually interferes with the cleaning rod. I guess velcro would be possible, however, I hate velcro. Always ends up collecting a bunch of crap on it.

Re: My $7.50 Cheek-Rest/Comb **UPDATED**

Looks great for a DIY project. I've been thinking about making one like that myself. I'm curious, do you know how the plexiglas would hold up in cold conditions? Mine will be going on a rifle I will be using to hunt coyotes this winter so I need it to be durable out in the cold. A while back I saw an article somewhere about someone making these out of some other material. Maybe Kydex.

Re: My $7.50 Cheek-Rest/Comb **UPDATED**

well, your in luck.. somewhat, lol I hunt up around winnipeg where we get around -20 to -40 celcius winters here. So that will be a great test. On a side note, Apparently this is a heavy duty high impact plexiglass. So hopefully that makes it more durable. I guess if you were concerned, maybe get a piece and put it in your freezer for like 5 hours and see what it could withstand.
