Keep in mind that I am completely new to long distance shooting. I ordered a 20 MOA base for my Rem 700 from Larue. It arrived yesterday, along with the usual swag from Mark.

I had assumed that the front would be higher than the rear (you know to gain 20moa of elevation) However, the base I got in is much higher in the rear.

Am I just stupid about mechanics of scope?

The front is lower than the rear.

By angling the front of the scope down, you have to raise the muzzle to point at a target. It's that which increases your ability to dial elevation - you're starting with the muzzle higher.

Re: My common sense might have left the building.

Yes.....you have it bass ackwards....higher in in rear is correct.

Yep....I'm too slow....should have taken typing in high school....grin!

Re: My common sense might have left the building.

A useful exercise is to point your optic at an object, and, while looking through the scope, dial a higher elevation on the scope. You'll note that the reticle descends with respect to the object you're viewing.

You can do the same exercise with windage. If you look through the scope while dialing left windage, you'll note that the reticle is moving to the right.

In both cases, the reticle is moving opposite to the desired point of impact change.

That's the only way it makes since to me too. Good old slow arrows match the way I think, LOL. It may be slow and indirect, but I'll get there eventually.

If Gen. G.A. Custer was killed with an arrow, then I'm the Queen of England.

Firearms lesson:
The Spencer IS a lever gun. Only difference is you have to cock the hammer as a seperate motion.

History lesson:
Custer's boys didn't have Spencers. Pretty sure they had Springfield Trapdoors which ARE single-shot.

Re: My common sense might have left the building.

I'm pretty sure that you're not the Queen of England, but you have a limited sense of humor, that's for sure.

Of course, if I lived in Thermopolis, I probably would be the same. Been there, ran away. Too cold in winter.

Re: My common sense might have left the building.

Point taken on Spencer vs Springfield. My point (with uanaccurate firearms reference) was Custer had much slower firearms in terms of rounds per minute than the Sioux. You know as well as I do lever gun is commonly used to describe Henrys, Winchesters, etc not the literal meaning having a lever. Custer would have still been outclassed Spencer or Springfield.

Anyway we were joking not checking references.

Always looking to learn

I'm sorry... I couldn't help myself. You're right. I'm just an asshole most of the time! Don't mind me. My brain is full of useless knowledge and often it leaks!!! LOL!

Re: My common sense might have left the building.

to the OP, man i though the same thing. i finally just accepted it. plus i couldnt mount the base the other way no matter what i thought.

and i thought we were supposed to be the ball? now we have to be the arrow?
