Hi everyone, just wanted to say new to the forums and wanted to run this past alot of you knowledgable folks. I was looking at the Remington 700 ADL Varmint with 26" barrel on sale at Dicks. I wanted to upgrade from my Rem 770 .30-06. Well a good friend who was looking for a 308 bolt action found out about the sale and purchased it. It was the only one Dicks had and I was kinda bummed.
He wasnt happy after he picked it up. He admitted he didnt even really look it over before he bought it. He doesnt like the fact that it doesnt come magazine fed. All sales are final at Dicks so I laughed at him. He turned around and sold it to me for 380 cash. It comes with remingtons scope. I am really happy because I beleive I got a really good bargain. I know its alot of rifle and will take a while before I need to start swapping things out and building. I guess a big question is should I stick with the Rem 4x12x40 scope for awhile or swap out the scope for the best I can afford off the bat. I do have about 500 for a scope right now.
Thanks everyone in advance.

Re: My first .308. Advice please?

If I were you I would hang on to the rifle and invest in lots of ammunition and practice. What you have will work just fine. Do you reload? If not, that is where I vote you put funds. I bet that rifle and scope will shoot very well after some load development. After that, maybe start saving up for some nice glass.

Re: My first .308. Advice please?

Thanks for the quick response. No I dont reload yet but friends and I at work are going to invest in a set up this month especially with the generous deal from Midway USA. I plan on hanging on to this one for awhile. Thanks again.

Re: My first .308. Advice please?

I love my remmy .308, absolutely love it.

I put a Leupold by 6-18x32(i think) scope on it, pure sex. Nail deer with it easy, plus in buck only season it is really nice to be able to confirm a buck from forever away. Throw on a Harris bipod and you got a stick.

However that scope is outside your limit, save up though - worth it.

If you are hunting use a 180 grain STX round, AMAZING results. I imagine with a 6" longer barrel it would be a slayer.

What are you using the rifle for?

Re: My first .308. Advice please?

So far I think I am going to use the rifle for long distance fun as it always intrigued me and something I always wanted to do. If I do hunt with it in WI it will be for shorter distances. I feel like a kid on Christmas again. Going to the range on thursday with a 200 yd and 100 yd range for rifles so i will zero and let you all know how she works. I appreciate the help.

Re: My first .308. Advice please?

Sounds like you got a good deal on the rifle. As you probably already know there are extensive aftermarket upgrades available for Remington 700.

If you haven't used the scope and it is in good condition, and you can get a good price for it, I would suggest upgrading your scope. Otherwise, keep it and practice.

Good glass can last forever, and can be switched to different rifle with upgrades. You can't hit when you can't see.

Re: My first .308. Advice please?

Placebo,

You got a great deal. You will note that an R700 SA goes for around $400 - stripped - you got a shooter.

Factory Rem triggers are adjusted by lawyers. Do a search for "adjusting remington 700 trigger". There are several articles on "how to", and it's not that difficult. If you are not comfortable attacking that, ask on the Hide for a GOOD gunsmith recommendation in your area. These guys are a wealth of knowledge and good info!

Good shooting!

Re: My first .308. Advice please?

Thanks KT but it comes with the Xmark. If I have to adjust more i will search and hopefully do myself. If I can redo the trigger on my S12 i can hopefully tackle the Rem 700.

Re: My first .308. Advice please?

hey, have your buddy buy some more stuff. i need a few things cheap, lol. his impulsiveness is your good deal. nice rifle, keep your scope as is and just start shooting. it will take you a while to decide what you want in a scope anyway. nikon makes a nice mildot for under $400 and there is even a vortex thats $100 with knobs and mildot. but i doubt it would be much better than what you have now. shoot it as is or snag a cheap mildot while you save for better glass.

Re: My first .308. Advice please?

I put on a SWFA Super Shiper 16 x 42 on a Seekin's Base and Rings on my Remy 700 .308 26" HB. Scope,Base and Rings ALL for about $550.00. Decent glass for the $ ! Glen Seekins work comes HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Here on the HIDE! That's why I bought from him! Works For Me!!!

Re: My first .308. Advice please?

You made a wise choice. I have two custom stick built on 700 actions (LA & SA). I would practice a lot and save some coin, then build yourself a nice custom on down the road. Everyone has to start somewhere.

Re: My first .308. Advice please?

Just sighted it in yesterday at the range. Hornady Match ammo.

What range or distance was that?

Re: My first .308. Advice please?

My buddies rangefinder said 150 yds. It was my rifles first outing and zeroing. We zeroed at 100 then moved the targets to farthest point. Unfortunately it was only 150. Man I love this weapon

Re: My first .308. Advice please?

Ooooohhhhhh, nasty shotgun pattern!

Up and Down is your breathing. Left and Right is you jerking the trigger. At 150M, all rounds should be in the red or in one ragged hole.

Check:
Position
Natural Point of Aim
Breathing
Trigger Squeeze
Recoil
Follow Through

BRASSFRR breathe, relax, aim, stop breathing, squeeze, fire, recover, reload or something like that. Make it your mantra as you shoot. Find a good book(Art of the Rifle or a manual) and study real hard on Basic Marksmanship Fundamentals
