Finally after waiting seems like forever, I have my own long range rig! I tried to gather as much information as possible here on the hide before I just started buying random stuff. My goal was to get a rifle that I can just target shoot with, and work on my fundamentals, and then move into some local matches.

Here are the rifle specs:
Remington 700 SPS-V .308 ( I had the barrel cut to 20 inches, and a new recessed target crown put on by a local smith)
McMillan A-5
Timney 510 trigger
Vortex PST 6-24-50 FFP (with new EBR-2C) mounted on a Seekins rail and Rings
Atlas bipod with QD mount
PTG DBM

I had a chance to take her out on tuesday, and fire the first rounds through her. I was very happy with the gun, and felt like it shot pretty good. The ammo I was using was Federal 180 grain fusion ( which shot pretty well). Once I had it on paper I switched to 168 grain Winchester Match. Here are some targets Pics

nice rig man! I know someone else already hit on it but yeah 168's won't do you too well once they go transonic. If you can't find Fed GMM's then maybe consider reloading. If you're getting pretty serious into the long range game, it's a good investment and I love the idea of shooting bullets that I put a lot of time and effort into.

First of all, welcome to the addictive sport of long range shooting. Believe it or not, this is just the beginning.

Second, nice setup. This is a great setup that will help you get out past the square ranges of just 100-200 yards. Although I do not think the shorter barrel will be good, you can fine tune if you reload.

I would recommend that you look at the 155 grain Lapua Scenars. I shoot them in a lot of matches and they work really well. I have beaten a lot of 6.5mm and 6mm shooters with the .308.

Also, I would recommend you look at the NorCal Practical Precision Rifle Club: NCPPRC: News If you want to learn how to shoot well, this is a great place to start. I have attended three of their Steel matches and they are so much fun.

If you ever make it up to Reno, let me know. We have plenty of desert out here to shoot at whatever we want (within reason).

Nice Rifle! Do you like the bipod? I've been using Harris and was thinking about picking up an Atlas.

I love the Atlas!. I've always used harris on all my hunting rifles and Ar's though and they have always worked very well for me. However I feel like I can load the Atlas easier than the harris.

Thanks for the kind words Sierra! I'm fully aware of the 168's limitations, I only bought them Cause I was wanting to just get out and shoot my rifle. The brass is mainly what I was after lol. I do reload and plan on using the 175's

yeah I seen the sickness coming as soon as I Joined snipershide! I really want to try out Sac valley, I heard it's awesome and the matches are a blast. I have been keeping my eye out for the next training clinic. I'd love to go to Reno and shoot, I actually been trying to find a spot up that way. I have done a little research on the scenars but not much. I ordered a box of 175 SMK's to get a load started for this rifle. I may look at the scenars too but their a bit more pricey.

Very nice, you seem like you know what you're doing then and have a great start. I don't think the shorter barrel will be too much of a limit for right now. Can you benefit from a longer barrel? Absolutely and later on you'll want to rebarrel maybe with a bartlein, shilen, etc. But can you hit out to 1000 with a 20" rem barrel? Absolutely. I just shot a nice 3/4 moa group at 940 with my 20" sps tactical in a McMillan stock.

Oh and the scenars are awesome bullets but as you've said they're pricey and I like to shoot a lot so I stick with 175SMKs off of midway sometimes you can get pretty good deals.

Here's a spot:

This is where I live (my house in the distance but can you spot my rifle pack?). Plenty of places to shoot.

Wow! Im jealous, and I believe your pack is on the set of rocks, on the left side? Is it possible to PM me some directions or GPS coordinates?
