Update: See below. Pulled the trigger on the Sig. The sale window was closing.

Going on an AR-10 with an 18" barrel. Not a precision rifle by any means, but I hope to take it out to 800 yds with some practice and a good scope. With my eyesight, I will need 24x at this distance.

I'm working with a $1,000 budget, so my options are limited. The latest Vortex Viper PST, Nikon Black, maybe something Burris, an older Leupold, the Sig, not sure what else. From this list, the Sig impresses me the most. Opinions and ideas welcome. This is my first post here btw.

shorter than a PST II
locking turrets
smoother turrets
better glass

IMO,
Don't pay too much attention to max magnification
glass quality>magnification
in terms of being able to see the target and make a good hit(call your shot)

Take a look at the Athlon Ares ETR 4.5-30x56. Plenty of great discussions and reviews out there and one can be found new for what you’re willing to spend

Under $1000 Sig or Athlon, but I was in a similar situation last year and I shot a SWFA 10x42 until I had enough money to buy a much better scope. I got a Leupold MK5 and the extra time I wait has been well worth it. But like it was said earlier get something YOU are happy with and shoot, don't worry about anybody else.

To clarify, I'm buying online, so I have no way of of testing any of the scopes. I'm just trying to get the best scope for my budget. It also needs to hold up to rough use.

you can check your local sporting goods stores. Cabelas, Sportsmans warehouse, Bass pro shop, Scheels, they will carry a large assortment of these brands.

I checked out the ones suggested and the ones on my list one more time. I ended up ordering the Sig. The sale at Dvor is over after today. Wish me luck. A mount is next.

No way I would trade my Tango 6 for another TX5i, or any of the other 1k priced options out there. The prices are low on the Tango 6s because of lack of popularity not because of lack of quality.

You will be way happier with the Sig or Athlon Etr over a Nikon or vortex PST I’ve had a few athlons liked them all and I’ve had a few vortex all of which broke, gen 1 and gen 2 PST never had a sig but I’ve been around them everyone likes them that I know.

OP where do you live? One thing that really helped me was being able to try so many different brands in real conditions. From $300 SWFA to $3000 NF. There are some really great people on SH and if you are at a range of any size there may be a few Hiders there who might let you take a peek. Trying them in the field on boiling hot Florida days saved me a colossal fortune seeing how they all stack up in crap conditions.

Austin, Texas. I'm sure I'll be buying scopes in the future, so if there's a place around here let me know.

Another member sent me a link to Rex's review of the Athlon ETR. It was very compelling, but getting Japanese build and glass over Chinese for the same price is not even a decision for me. I have Nikon lenses that are close to 50 years old and are just incredible. I'll take the 100 year heritage over the up-and-coming anytime.
