Re: My heritage revealed
In my Anthropology class at USF (1980), I found Dr. Waterman had given me an A for the semester that I had not earned. I went to see her and told her about the error which was greeted with incredulity that I had not kept quiet and taken the higher grade.
I replied that I had not earned it, was not a thief and believed honor was one of the things that seperated us from our primitive ancestors.
Frankly, between my full time employment and the fact I had basically slept through the class, that A made me ashamed. And I worried someone else may have mistakenly recieved the grade I deserved!
She noted the correction and off I went. When looking through my transcripts a year or so later, I found my grade had been officially changed to a B. This was not the grade she had noted in our meeting. As infrequent as it was to run into any other professors, especially on so large a campus, it seemed I often ran into Dr. Waterman. I was a business major and not terribly near her part of the campus, yet she never forgot my name and always seemed happy to say hello.
She was getting pretty salty back then and I haven't seen her show on the USF PBS affiliate in years, thus she may have moved on to the other side. That said, she is (or was) someone I hope my daughters might have as a professor as it certainly wasn't her fault I didn't take full advantage of her class, as I regrettfully learned that she was a worthy scholar and I had been a slacker.
