Re: My Marlin 917VR .17 HMR

I have the wood stocked version. Not bad for the price. I run Savage mags in mine and they seem to do better than the Marlin mags. How's yours shoot? Mine was getting inconsistent, but I floated the barrel channel some more and adjusted my Rifle Basix trigger down a little more too. I need to get out and shoot it to see if it helped any.

Re: My Marlin 917VR .17 HMR

Nice. Does it have the thumb hole on the wooden stock? That's sweet. They had one like that when I bought mine but I'm a lefty. Mine's a real straight shooter. Varmint Al's says that the best ammo for the 17 was Winchester V-Max, so that's all I've ever used. But I've only had it since August.

Re: My Marlin 917VR .17 HMR

No thumbhole here, mine looks like yours, just has cheap wood stock on it and bull barrel. I found mine preferred the 20 gr. CCI Gamepoints. I use it for a short range groundhog gun and long range tree rat rifle. Kills more paper than anything.

Re: My Marlin 917VR .17 HMR

I went to the 20's due to the 17gr. ballistic tips splashing on bigger groundhogs. Now I aim for a bone like head or shoulder and let them eat. Less crawl offs that way. 20's tear up the tree rats less too. Not enough bone to get them exploding like the ballistic tips.

Sweet stick. I need to get me a small bore rifle.

As a self proclaimed red-neck I should probably know this but I will ask anyway? What is a tree rat? Squirrel? If so, thems good eats.

Of course a tree rat could also be those liberals that climb trees to keep the loggers from cutting them down.....
