i got rid of my armalite ar-30, for something i feel is a bit more practical. im gonna take this thing out this weekend and stretch it out a bit.

so what do you think?

Savage 110 action - accurized, and smooth as silk

E. Arthur Brown Barrel - .243 chrome molly 1-8” twist, hand lapped

80 rounds fired to break in barrel, cleaned after each shot 1-10 and after each 3 shots after that.

Rifle basix 1-3 pound trigger set at 1.25lb with no creep or over travel

Choate Ultimate Varmint Stock - full length aluminum bedded including bedded action

Bushnell elite 4200 6-24x40 1/8 MOA adjustment

Harris Bench Rest Bipod

the scope in the pics is long gone, and now has the bushnell on top of it.

Re: my new bolt action....

Not to hurt your feelings but:

I hope you got MUCH lower rings for your bushnell.

Also, if the barrel was hand lapped, why did you waste barrel life, time, bullets, powder and cleaning suplies "breaking it in"?

I am sure you will be very pleased with the rifle, I had a Savage .243 with a factory tube in one of those stocks. It shot VERY well.

the bushnell is mounted as low as it can be mounted, it clears the barrel by about 40/1000ths.

for the breaking in of the barrel, thats what was relayed to me by the builder of the rifle. i guess maybe its an overkill type situation, i dunno.

40/1000ths of an inch.... i do cnc machining so im not used to having to specify the inch part of that increment, sorry.

maybe the part where i said that the scope in the picture isnt on the rifle anymore is only showing up on my screen.....either that or people just cant read.

so ill simplify this a bit...

I took that scope off and put a new one on. the old scope is in the picture, not the bushnell. the new scope has a smaller objective and is mounted with lower rings. i got the lowest rings i could find that would work. that is NOT the current scope in the picture.

if further clarification is needed, let me know, though im sure it will be painfully obvious.

Re: my new bolt action....

Don't worry, I got what you're saying. Some people just have a bad-attude today I guess. It is Friday morning and all. Lets see a pic of it with the new glass! That sounds pretty low for the glass......

i was planning on some new pics today. as for the low glass, thats the way ive always liked my scopes low.

Re: my new bolt action....

Nice lookin' rig... but it will gain points with a lower scope. I don't know that much about Savage actions but that action looks really long for a .243. Not that Remington doesn't make a long action rifle that shoots shorter rounds (M-24). I was just curious if it is a long action that you chose to use? Or does Savage only make one size?

im not the most educated on the mechanics of, or the building of rifles, im just the driver.

to the best of my knowledge this is the standard size 110 action.

so is that a good thing or bad thing? what difference does it make between short or long action? im trying to learn what i can here so an info would be great.

Re: my new bolt action....

The benefit is for handloading. You can seat bullets long (sometimes it's more accurate to seat the bullets to the lands to eliminate the jump) and still be able to use the internal magazine. If it was a short action and you wanted to seat the bullets so long that they wouldn't fit into the magazine, you would need to load them on top of the follower and use the rifle as a single shot.

If you don't handload, there is no benefit to the long action. It doesn't hurt anything, just makes you deal with a longer pull of the bolt when cycling the action.

this rifle is built in a way that the internal magazine isnt useful. its a one cartridge gun.

i reload for all my handguns, but havent gotten comfortable yet with loading for rifle. i will be loading for it soon enough though.

Re: my new bolt action....

To be a little more clear, the long action is for longer cartridges (30-06, .270 etc) where the short action is for shorter cartridges (.223, .308). The longer cartridges won't physicaly fit into the short actions. The size (length) of the internal magazine follows the size of the action (long or short). If you tried to put a 30-06 round into the magazine of a short action, it would't fit. However, you can fit a 308 round into a long action magazine.

The big thing about a Savage is that you can change your barrel yourself. With this ability, you can change the caliber of the rifle (you may have to change the bolt face also, it just depends on what cal you are going from/to). Some people like short action cartridges and some like long action cartridges, it comes down to the ballistics/efficency of the round. Much of the debate comes to a ford/chevy thing. With a long action, you have the ability to change calibers to almost anything you want in the future.

Why was it built like that? Did you have it built to specs you wanted or pick it up already built/unfired? If you wanted to, you could make the magazine functional again.

Since you reload, I'm going to assume you have some manuals. Read the chapters on bullet seating depth (to the lands), that's where the benefit to your gun is.

Get a set of dies, some powder, bullets and primers. What are you waiting for?!?!?!?!

i picked this rifle up already built. as for the magazine, i am fine with it the way it is. i never use the internal magazine in a bolt gun anyway.

i appreciate the time your taking to explain some of this stuff. as i said before, i understand much if the mechanics of these rifles, im just the driver. this type of thing is all new to me.

Re: my new bolt action....

At one time, when savage was just trying to survive, they only made one action. The 110, so if you got a .223 during that time, it was on a long action.

I have had VERY good results with the Nosler 100 grain solid base spitzer boat tails, 100 grain gamekings and the 85 grain HPBT game kings, all being pushed by H4350.

With that 1-8 twist, you will be able to stabilize the 107 SMKs and the 115 DTAC's.

You just need to find a range that goes out to about 1400 yards.

Happy shooting.

Re: my new bolt action....

Welcome GS, great looking rifle. I hope it performs for you.

I am new to this site as well. Most folks here are extremely helpful and its a great place to learn. As with any thing you do, some people just need a place to vent and you can be the one that catchs it from time to time.

Take what you can use here and just move past stuff you can't.

I had a Savage 110 in 243 that was my first deer rifle. I loved that gun, WISH I HAD NEVER SOLD IT, but that was about 40 years ago.

Enjoy your new toy and this site.

Re: my new bolt action....

well i went out a put some rounds down range today with this rifle. i seem to be having some issues with my glass, the reticle doesnt seem to track accurately, so some new glass is in order. i believe i will rob my nikon m223 off my ar15 and use it for a while.

once dialed at 200 yards though, it put 3 rounds in a spot the size of a nickel at 200 yards, not too shabby for my first trip out with the rifle. at 100 yards it put 3 rounds all touching each other.

i believe i will get along with this rifle just fine.

as for the long action, the bolt is a bit different than stock savage rifles ive had in the past. there seems to be an extra piece attached toward the end of the bolt, that comes back down the side of the bolt a bit, that limits the rearward travel of the bolt. i have never seen this on any of the other savage 110 action rifles ive had in the past.

Re: my new bolt action....

went shooting and im very impressed with this rifle. my bushnell scope wasnt acting right so i stick my nikon on it.

went out and sighted at 100, then zero'd out my turrets. went to 250, dialed in, and good to go.shooting consistent 1" group at 250 yards with winchester ballistic silvertip ammo.

time to swap to some good reloads and see what it will really do.

What's the longest range you have to shoot there?

Re: my new bolt action....

took the stock to my hydro dip guy today. should have it back by sunday. since ill be doing some hunting with this rifle, i wanted some sort of a camo on it, but something that reflected my personality some as well. he had a gun there that was dipped in this pattern and it was just amazing. i think this should accomplish both goals....

here is the pattern i chose....

Re: my new bolt action....

PLEASE post pics as soon as you get your gun dipped in that pattern. Ive seen a few bows dipped in that and other similar patterns and I absolutely love it, but havent seen a bolt rifle with it on.

I completely understand. I had to try! It's hard to find anywhere to shoot over 200yds here.
