Re: My New LONG RANGE rifle

That is all I bought it for, I wish I had a place to make and put a steel buffalo up to shoot at.. I have an 1895G to hunt with.

Sure gets some questions at the range.

Re: My New LONG RANGE rifle

Thats not a rifle thats a freaking Mortar! That 45-70 has the same ballistic caricitriestic as a 60MM mortar! Love it dude, I always wanted a sharps! It was that round that killed every buff in the west!

Re: My New LONG RANGE rifle

They say it is, I don't know that I would want to. There is a man that has rechambered one of his to 45-120 and shoots it.

The 300 grain is all they had around here the other day/ Am trying to get organized to set up my reloading stuff to play with it. Supposed you can shoot a 45 caliber muzzle loader ball with about 6 grains of reddot and it makes a neat plinking load out to around 50 yards.

I have a Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70 and that is what sold me on the caliber. I have also ordered one of the Marlin 1895 SBL rifles, waiting on it to come in.

I want a Sharps one day too but ain't got no patience to save the money and the wife always fins something to spend my rathole money on...

Neat rifle, if it shoots anything like the light carbines in lever action trim it will probably rattle your teeth with heavy loads.

Cast lead 400's with some Red Dot or Unique will make it much more enjoyable to shoot, my dad runs mostly cast lead through his (Marlin 189x big bore lever), I think in the 5 years he's owned it there's probably only 100 rounds of full power jacketed loads came out of the muzzle.

You're probably spot on with the 45 lead ball trick, it wouldn't surprise me at all if it worked.

Re: My New LONG RANGE rifle

Those are fun rifles. I shot one of those at my gun club. The owner replaced the butt stock section with a shotgun butt stock w/ a decelerator pad and it worked well.

350gr weren't bad at all, similar to my .35 Remington. The 400gr were stout and much over 5-10 shots I'm guessing would induce some flinching. Test with 300-350-ish bullets first. Then again I think he said he loaded the 400gr a bit warm.

The 45-70 is my all time favorite cartridge. For your Gallery Load you should start out with 3.0 grains of Red Dot. In my rifles I shoot 3.5 grains of Red Dot. With the longer barrel the load makes almost no sound at all. As a matter of fact you actually hear the hammer drop. And the dropping hammer is louder than the load. Two things to watch when loading a gallery load. 1. I use a Dacron filler, you need to make sure the powder is at the bottom of the case with the primer. This is essential-you can create real problems if you do not do that. 2. Properly seating the ball. I seat the ball where the ball is level with the top of the case rim mouth, then I apply just enough crimp to maintain the ball in position.

When developing a Gallery load you want just enough powder for the ball to clear the barrel every time. 3.0 grains will be enough in shorter Marlin barrels, but in you longer barrel it usualy takes 3.5 grains, or slightly more.

I use my gallery load for small game hunting while I am deer hunting. You can shoot about any small game out to 40 or 50 yards with zero noise, so you can eat grouse during deer season, without affecting your deer hunting.

For your standard load try a 405 grain cast bullet(I cast my own) over 40.0 grains of RL7. This will yield roughly 1600 fps in your rifle. This load is more than adequate to kill buffalo, yet milder on your shoulder than the harder hitting loads. I can cast and load over 500 rounds for less than $100. That is the real beauty of the 45-70. Tom.

Re: My New LONG RANGE rifle

Get to know it, they are fun rifles. Wish I had similar. First "long range" shoot I did was with 45-120 and paper patch bullets over black powder. 1147yards. With peep sights. I was hooked with the long ragne stuff.
Never have gotten into those rifles yet. Black powder cartridge is another ball game.

Re: My New LONG RANGE rifle

I had one for a long time. Great fun rifle and suprisingly accurate with proper handloads. Be aware that the H&R is not considered able to handle the really hot loads that a Ruger #1 would.

Off the top of my head I can't remember what the loading level groups are called except the first was for original Springfields. The H&R falls into the middle group. Check out the Sierra manual and just don't be tempted to stray into near 458 Win power areas. I had best luck with the 405gr cast lead bullets.

Sharps are great long range rifles, although their trajectory looks like a mortar. Billy Dixon killed Quanah Parker’s medicine man, Esa-Tai, (literal name, coyote dung) at 1,538 yards with a single shot from his Sharps 50 - a feat only surpassed some 100 years later. Here is a link to the story:

Re: My New LONG RANGE rifle

I have a friend who hunts on a primitive lease and shoots some comps with something similar to HOGGHeAD's rig, I think the rifle cost him around 4k and when shooting at 1k with it he swears you can drink a coke before you hear the gong hit. Its his baby and he is very very good with it. I have fired it, its neat.
