In the picture of Carlos Hathcock with his m40 the scope looks brown although everyone else here has a green redfield scope. Why is his brown? I had seen that it has to do with a brine of some sort but I don't understand the process or exactly what a brine even is.
Anyone mind explaining?

This is "clear" Type III anodize.
The color of anodizing (other than this natural color) is the result of the dye process used. It is not terribly uncommon for anodizers to screw up a color.
They may have dyed a batch green and tried to use the liquid a second time with poor results to get a brown color to happen if that's the case.

Wow! Thanks griffen armament! That actually really helped. So if I wanted to do the brown a company that anodizes could do it?

The dyes used in the 1960's were organic and very easily damaged by UV rays. This is part of the reason the Greenies turn so many colors.
A coule of other reasons are:
The greenies were soft coat Anodized, so the layer of dye was not too deep/thick to begin with so environmental factors took their toll quickly.
The slight differences in alloy from piece to piece makes a difference in the color.
I have 2 original greenies that have 5 different colors on them.

Book work has slowed due to the move.
After shot I will be redoubling my efforts, as it turns out it will probably end up being a 2 vol. set.
100 guns,minimum of 6 pages per rifle, some as many as 10 plus pages, sections on all the other kit, NV, alternate scopes, tripods, bipods, deployment cases.
It would look like a Guttenberg bible.
Keep the faith, it is coming.
