Yeah, poor man's leupold. The whole brand new 700p rig set me back less than a halve of what that SVD has cost me. For the price of the two of them I could have gotten a heeeell of a custom rig... It's Ok, maybe my next paycheck... LOL

Re: My Retirement Fund

No offence man, and it may be a learning experience for you; you spent half on something that is over twice, if not four times as accurate than a SVD.

Jee wiz, I hope you are right on the accuracy. I shot two 800/900/1000 yard F-class matches with the SVD at Quantico, VA and had a highest score of 387 (out of 500) with the Serbian Prvi Partizan 182 grn commercial ammo, 4x and later 8x scope. While it shoots well for a gas gun, the velocities I get out of it are just too low for 1000 yards (2500fps). I do find an ocasional X at 800 and 900 averaging 132 out of 150 at these distances. Have not shot the Remmy at these distances yet. I f you are right, I should be in the 490 score range! LOL
PS I dont reload, so those Black Hills BTHP 175grn better work!

Re: My Retirement Fund

Anyone else think this whole thread was nothing but a big gag? He spent his 401k on $1500 worth of rifles and garbage glass? Then he shot a 1000 yd. F Class match with an SVD and won? What were the other shooters using, mini 14's?

Anyway, it was good for a laugh.

I did not mean mine was the highest score, far from it and definately nothing to brag at. I meant MY highest score was 387/500. The winning score was in the high 480ies. I've posted my range card here:

Anyway, sorry you felt like bashing my glass and iron, but you are probably tired after a long day...
however, If you ARE a serious shooter, I'd like to see you rig, range cards, etc. I'm new to this still and always open to a good polite advise.

Re: My Retirement Fund

A guy I know, friend of a friend kind of thing, was looking at where the market was headed about 18 months ago and decided maybe he'd rather invest in something else. So he bought a canary yellow Carerra GT. Apparently there were only like 12 of them made in that color. Dropped something like $348k on it. It has it's own warehouse up by Arlington airport and he takes it out for a spin once in a blue moon.

But, sure enough, the market tanked and THAT particular $348k didn't go with it. Has probably even appreciated. That man was pretty savvy, IMHO.

However, you might want to consider picking up a pamphlet from your local bank entitled "So you don't want to be a walmart greeter..." or something similar.

Re: My Retirement Fund

Ratbert, you mean, WalMart is hiring?
Will I get the employee discount on the ammo?

Look, guys, sorry my post rubs so many the wrong way (I can't see why). This is how it went down:
-SVD was bought beacause I collect Russian firearms. I love this thing.
-Then a friend invites me to shoot a match at Quantico. I did that and loved shooting long distance.
-Several shooters advised me that the SVD was not ideal for long range matches.
-Several people have recommended 700P as an inexpensive starter
rifle.
-It didnot make sense to me to invest $1500 in a scope yet and this very forum spoke highly of the SWFA SS as a good cheap glass
-My 401K is fine. I diverted last 4 contributions to pay off the Visa I used to by the 700P rig.

Great forum, thanks for caring!

SWEEET! Gotta love the "get of basement free card"!

Thanks for sharing, really. When we get to the EOTWAWKI, we will all be glad there are other armed citizens. My interests are turning from CQB to long range and there are many like minded people here, even if some take themselves too seriously.

Re: My Retirement Fund

serzant, a tuned 700P with quality glass is capable of 490s... I used to do it back in the day, man. Give it a try and you may see what I was referring to. I took 3rd in the Texas State Long Range Championship with a 700P several years ago.

I have an AR-10T that is much more accurate than a SVD. I tried shooting it once in a F Class match as an experiment and shot in the 470's.... unacceptable accuracy for me but I enjoyed the experimentation.

What I am saying is, your 700P will blow your SVD away if loaded properly and driven correctly. Take it to the next F Class match and you will see. No flame intended, just trying to help you get better scores.

Thanks, totally agree, that's why I bought 700P. I had to fire lap the bore to remove the toolmarks that folks at Remington left in there (BTW, SVD has a beatiful bore). I also had to remove some stock rezin from around the bedding block that folks at HS Precision left there, so that there was no metal-to-metal contact on the RHS of the receiver. After running Tubb's lapping bullets through it, the consistency/group size has improved dramatically. Velocity spread was 110 fps (!!!) and now is 34 fps with factory loads (Prvi Partizan Match 182 grain). Five-round group size went down from 1" to .68".
Also, the cleanup of the molded rezin around the action has eliminated the stringing of the groups.
Oh, almoust forgot, the alluminum bedding block had burrs in the edge of the action lag's contact surface (!!!). WTF, Remington and HS Precision?!

Re: My Retirement Fund

serzant, if you really want to ring out a bit more accuracy with that 700P you need to get some Black Hills match or Fed match(or reload). Prvi Partizan match leaves a lot to be desired in the accuracy department. I'm not saying there's not a rifle out there somewhere that shoots it well but overall it is WAY behind the two I mention above.

Thanks! I did try both of the brands above and the accuracy is very good. I have stashed Black Hills 175gr BTHP for my next match. I used Prvi in the test above as a worst case scenario (175 gr FMJ).

For what it's worth; Serzant, if you are going down the "no-reload" road, you should probably look around and find a couple boxes of different brands (Federal Match, Black Hills, M118LR, Lapua, etc) and find out what your rifle likes. Then stock up on the best. Otherwise, you could be handicapping yourself.

Oh, and try not to let things get to you here. Above all else, it's still a forum (large collection of individuals and ideas). Thicken up the skin and learn to filter out the crap, and you can find a wealth of knowledge here, trust me.
