so you can get a BFR in 3”

And this for backup
Friends dad offered to let me shoot his 45/70 revolver. And I quote " as long as you don't lock your wrists, it won't break them" I politely declined.

I haven’t shot one, but the guys I know who have them say it’s not near as bad as you’d think. In my experience none of the large revolvers I’ve shot have been what people describe or videos show. I’d shoot one.

We used to shoot 700gr rounds from s&w500 one handed and it really wasn’t a big deal and we could hit stuff, videos would lead you to believe it’s aweful.

Or you can get a 4" or 3" 500 S&W, shoot the 440gr reduced loads and still have more ft/lbs of energy... and very manageable recoil, very.

The numbers from that 3" in that article weren't impressive at all, and the note of the recoil on the full bore loads, like that Buffalo bore at 1400 ft/lbs, which isn't bad... but that had me thinking of this

John Ross put together a 510gr 93% MEPLAT flat nose hardcast that he pushed to 1740fps in his 5" 500 S&W.

That's 3,428 ft/lbs out of a carry-able handgun that likely recoils like that Buffalo Bore load in that 3" 45-70 Revolver but produces over 200% of the energy.

Even if we accounted for the extra 2" of barrel length and gave that 3" 45-70 revolver 100fps more velocity we're looking at about 200% exactly.

Anyways, people discount the 500 S&W for recoil, but even that reduced 440gr hardcast load is, in general, pushing as much energy as the best Full power loads in the other big bore revolvers, but will be more manageable as they will be the brutal heavy loads in those other calibers.

Push the 500 S&W, and, well, what Ross did was nuts, but would be a devastating stopper for a handgun that can be carried. But his guns were essentially custom, smaller gaps for more velocity, then of course he reloaded and even designed the bullet and cast it.

I have zero experience with the big revolvers and don't doubt a word of your post.
I was a teenager when that happened and took the owners word for it.

However, that derringer would fucking suck lol.

The only handgun that’s ever hurt to shoot was a S&W scandium J-frame with hot .357 loads. I was complacent with my grip do to shooting a lot of big bore at the time the first shot got me and had to empty the rest of the cylinder and play it cool.

I’d have to agree with the above post, large frame S&W is pretty hard to go wrong with.

I'd feel pretty good with this buddy as well with this in a cross chest rig.

These are neat just because they are ridiculous, but definitely over rated lol. It’s another one of those “wrist breaking” fudd lore firearms...in the larger calibers anyway. I’ve shot the 44 and 50ae, but never the 357 that I can remember but I had a few years where I was shooting all sorts of odd shit a lot.
