Fellas,

I have a brand new .300wsm sps-varmint, and I'm expecting my scope to arrive tomorrow. I have 100ct brand new winny brass, and none of it will even fit in my chamber.I've tried to resize the brand new brass to the point of where my rock chucker press won't allow me to fl size it any smaller, and yet it won't fit. What's wrong here?

Thanks for any help.

UPDATE: I loaded up 21 rounds of 210vld's to magazine length. 4x 58gr, 4x58.5gr 4x 59, 4x59.5, and 4x60 with one spotter round loaded at 57gr, to also check pressures.

They chamber, but yet there's a little extra force needed. After I get the bolt down the first time, I can bring it up, and push it and it goes back down normally, like any old 700. I can also pull the still loaded cartridge (after initially chambering it) almost to the point of where it extracts, and push the bolt back forward and chamber the round with ease. I'm puzzled.

I've never had this problem with virgin brass before but did you measure the OAL of the case? Is it with-in spec? Do you have any other WSM brass to compair it to. you might just need to trim the necks. Then again it could be a bad batch

If you find that it's not within spec and theres nothing you can do to correct the problem, call Winchester and they'll replace it.

The brass is the correct dimensions, it is a .300wsm rifle with .300wsm brass. I tried trimming one piece of brass to 2.082, which is .008 below the trim-to length, then resizing it again. It didn't grow, and didn't fit.

How far can you advance the brass into the chamber? Did you pull the bolt and look for obstructions (had to ask) Use a flashlight and look for anything that looks out of whack.

Re: my scope to arrive tomorrowBrass Issue-Help needed

That is a good question that I honestly can't answer. I could prolly kow by the end of the night, though.

Also just realized that the bolt WILL close with the new brass, but it takes a little force. Not too much force, but the bolt kind of 'clicks' when it goes down with one of these pieces of brass.

Get your callipers and measure the muzzle ID and make sure you didnt accidently get a different calliber barrel in a missmarked box. (I'm grasping at straws here)

Re: my scope to arrive tomorrowBrass Issue-Help needed

That sounds like a headspace issue. You might need to order a shim shell plate from Redding. Make sure you can chamber at least 5 rounds, load them with a safe starting load and shoot them. Then come back and check your die function and chamber fit after resizing.

Re: my scope to arrive tomorrowBrass Issue-Help needed

Because the brass will chamber, but it takes a little force and clicks like I said.

I plan on shooting 210vld's. I think I'll load up some light loads to shoot tomorrow.

Re: my scope to arrive tomorrowBrass Issue-Help needed

The edit info makes it sound like you're seating the round deeper as you lock the bolt due to contact with rifling. Are there any indications on the ogive of contact? I know that's a shot in the dark since the original info reads like the brass did not have a bullet seated. If it's just new/fl sized brass without a bullet that caused your initial issues then I'd verify your headspace as has been mentioned. Make sure your bolt face is clean and free of any build up or shavings...

Good luck!

Re: my scope to arrive tomorrowBrass Issue-Help needed

I figured out the issue. The extractor is shaped incorrectly which upon chambering shaves brass off the rim of the case. (the 'click' upon chambering) Later tonight I'll make a detailed post explaining what I've found out, with some pictures.

Re: my scope to arrive tomorrowBrass Issue-Help needed

Seems to be a fairly common problem with the Remington extractors. Here are some pics of brass from one of my rifles that had the same issues. I took it to a local smith that took a small amount of material off the face of the extractor and it works fine now.
