I haven't shot steel challenge since June and have been working alot . So me and a buddy from work hooked up with an introduction to two gun . It has morphed into three gun and will be a competition on the same Saturday every month . So low and behold the timing belt on my Nissan breaks and hammers the valves . So I talk to my buddy and tell him I'm thinking of canceling to work Saturday . The extra cash will help sort the vehicle issue out . He informs me that because so many people tried to get in on this and the cut off was 50 that I might get blackballed for bailing . So I tell the wife that I'm working and may likely be blackballed for bailing and she says " don't cut your nose off to spite your face . No point in missing out or being blackballed we'll figure this out . Go shooting " . Man I struck gold with my girl .

Are you sure it hammered the valves or just being told that? Done a lot of timing belts, certain engines are almost a guarantee of bent valves (germans) others it can be a 50/50 shot, depending where everything stopped at when it broke.

Yeah it's an interference engine . It died and when I tried to crank it over I could hear the valves and pistons doin metal on metal .

you doing the work yourself? the only engine I know of that is 100% NOT interference is the old ford 1.9 OHC in the ford escort (started life as a 1.6 and ended as a 2.0 all non-interference). otherwise they all claim "interference" but that doesn't mean 100% chance. Be happy to help if possible. What nissan and what engine??

I know dick about cars. That said, I saved my mechanics life once (literally)so we a little more trusting relationship than most mechanics with their customers. He told me that most of the Japanese motors will not destroy valves unless you are under a lot of RPMs when you pop the belt. This was at a time I had 3 different Japanese vehicles (4runner, Subaru, and Honda) so I was pretty interested.
He has always done all the non-warranty work on all my cars, before and after the incident (he had some wiring issues in his ticker), and has always been awesome and I trust him more than most people I know.

Been turning wrench for almost 30 years, and since a customer never tells me the RPMs at the time of failure (customers like to lie to their mechanic) I can't say he is correct on the RPM deal. But I will agree that a huge percentage of the time on an asian engine valves are fine. German cars on the other hand would be bent valves 85% of the time.

LOL. Customers were so full of shit. Oh I just checked the oil and the water. Yea you did. I once saw a red top cummins blown almost completely in half, the only thing holding it together was the oil pan. I asked the guy, "what kind of noise did that make?" He shrugs and said, "I don't know." I know that shit had to sound like a cannon going off, and I know it didn't happen while he was idling. Its sad when you know the default is lie to me.

Oh and I turned it over , it spooled up , started and died . I tried it aga8n and thought that don't sound right . So being first thing in the 0 Dark Fuck This AM I tried it again when my brain kicked in and said hey fucktard you're hammering the valves . If you really think the valves aren't bent I'll change the belt and see what happens .

Yes sir . Love that place , great people . I belong to Holmesburg . You ever come up this nexk of the suburban sprawl ?

I used to. It's a long story. Had to do with a certain club officer who offended me. He's no longer there after an "AD" in the parking lot with a finger-fucked 1911. Seems he ran out of popularity.

2A - I hear ya. Lying isnt really my gig so it doesnt always occur that people just do that.
Im wrong enought just bwing wrong without lying!

I work as a nurse, you know how many times people tell me they have been eating healthy and exercising, not drinking or doing drugs? And they are fat as crap and their tox screen is lit like a Christmas Tree. So I get it. Oh I get it.

Alpha - forgot to mention, you do have a helluva an awesome wife. A lady who reminds her man to relax and enjoy himself a little is awesome.
Good luck with that engine sir.

Sorry to hear about your car problems. Congrats on picking a good woman. I'd hate to know where I'd be today if it weren't for my wife.

That is the only way to know for sure. If you are doing it yourself then it is a no-brainer. Put it together just enough to run and see if it starts. If it runs for 15 secs shut it off and finish reassembly.

The issue becomes at a normal shop there would obviously be some lost labor or "extra" labor charge to take it back apart if the valves are damaged. Since most people just don't understand AND most mechanics don't give a shit it is easier to just do everything. I generally spend 15-30 min explaining in detail how it works and get the customer to see the benefit of trying a belt first.

You haven't told us what vehicle/engine. If you need any repair info or some special tool let me know. Phone/laptop will be on the tool box but it will be noisy in the shop today. I check both often but i might miss post/pm for 30 min or so.

Alphatree, engines are temporary, a good wife is for life, you are blessed. My wife rocks. She shoots 3-gun, competition pistol & long range. She cooks me dinner after a full day at work, walks the dog and if I hear a window break in the middle of the night I just roll over and ask her to "handle it" 'cause I know she could lol! I too am truly blessed. God bless all the good women out there!

Something like that. A buddy came over yesterday evening. He's 40 and single and a fucking mess. I used to envy him at times.

Uh huh. God help them if I lose mine somehow. She's definitely my better half.

Yeah I find the saying " behind every great man is a great woman " funny . Fact is she's way out front and I'm trying to keep up . The car is a 2001 Nissan Maxima . Has served me well and not into a car payment right now . If the timing belt doesnt work out I can get an engine and tranny
    $700 per each . Not into wastin money as I got a couple nines , couple of 45s , shotguns , AR and a .308 to feed . A man's gotta have priorities .

I will look in the morning but if i remeber 2001 maxima is nothing special. Pretty straight forward. If you decide you need a used engine. STOP we need to talk just a minute ( i do a lot of used engines/parts).

Thanks 2nd . I'll give you a shout if I need an engine . Gettin ready for intro to two gun right now . Should be awesome , they're callin for liquid sunshine .

Good luck on your two gun.

Everything I have (alldata and mitchell on-demand) says that the 2001 maxima (3.0 v6) has timing chains not timing belt. Big difference (all though still might have not hurt the engine). You will have to take valve covers off. At that point there is a way to check for bent valves. Do you have an air compressor. I had to think a little, but Nissan has never been fond of belts, seems like they always use chains.
