Stores completely packed. Delivery services employing kids as young as 10 to drive full sized vans because they need people. Cannot blame them either, after the clusterfuck of the last 3 years.
My cousin had been living in Shanghai with Eleanor since he got back from South Africa and they had actually weathered the COVID saga decently with good preparations. He had never been afraid of COVID since the beginning and even less worried about this shit right now. He does NOT scare easily and so far the only place that had legitimately scared him and creeped him out to the core was North Korea when he and several other instructors at the archery school he had been teaching at since his return to Shanghai had gone on a pilgrimage to the Royal Goguryeo and Joseon Dynasty Tomb Complex outside of Pyongyang to pay respects to the tomb of King Dongmyeong (aka King Jumong of Goguryeo) who is considered the patron saint of continental east Asian archery martial arts. He was far more uneasy in Pyongyang than even during the most restless periods in Johannesburg when he feared for his Irish wife's safety. The entire atmosphere in North Korea is one of utter paranoia, and a constant state of forlorn emptiness and dread lurking just around the corner. Even the bus the Chinese tour group transferred to after getting off the train had wiretaps and snoopers mounted under EVERY seat with notices everywhere in multiple languages that every conversation is being monitored by Korean Peoples' Army intelligence. And soldiers with AK-74s or QBZ-181s everywhere in Pyongyang, even in places where you are just not supposed to see full battle-arrayed troops anywhere in "peacetime"...
