Hey guys, sorry for the first post being a question that has probably been discussed... I read the FAQ, I did the search, etc... I can't seem to find what I'm looking for.

Here we go:

I just bought my first hunting rifle (I grew up in Upstate NY, we had to use shotguns) and have been in Texas for 10 years. I have shot ARs for 15 years or so and feel very comfortable with them, but this is my first bolt gun. I need mount help. I have used Larue extensively for a long time on the AR platform but for this project a removable scope isn't a huge factor.

Rifle: Remington 700 SS 5-R Milspec
Scope: Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50
Use: Hunting 250-400 yd average - eventually LR shooting course at TacPro here in TX

So... 2 questions:

Model 700 Picatinny Base with QD rings vs. solid mount rings vs. solid mount 1-piece?

Recommendations on which make/model you like.

My current "short list" is the Larue rail and low mount combo or the Nightforce 1-piece

Get yourself an inclined 1 piece picatiny rail and any high quality rings.

Seekins
Badger Ordanace
NightForce
Leupold

They are all good

RicosRevenge,

With an AR your always taking the scope on and off. With a bolt gun not so much, especially if you have no iron sights on board. Think one piece Pic rail base, and good top mounts with side bolts. Not a damn thing wrong with Nightforce or Seekins or Badger Ord base and ring combo.

Thanks guys... Waldo... definately agree on the incline. I believe the NF is a 20 MOA base.

Badger and GGG seem to come up quite a bit. I hadn't seen Seekins yet.

What would the advantage be to use a base/ring combo (like the Badger) compared to a direct mount to the reciever? That is not a fascetious question... I really want to know. In my mind that allows a 2nd or 3rd issue that could come up due to separate parts.

Thanks again,

~ Rico

Rico,

Not sure what your talking about. What issues with separate base and rings? A bolt gun is not a AR. Look at what GAP puts on their custom bolt rifles. Look at what Tac Ops puts on theirs. See any direct to receiver mounts? NO, what you see are one piece Picatinney rail bases and separate rings.

If there were 2nd or 3rd issues they would not be using what they use. Because Larue or GG&G mounts are the thing for AR's does not translate over to bolt guns. Different platform, different solutions.

badger, seekins, tps, nightforce 2 pc, leupold mk4, all top names, good quality, Up to you, as various makers bases vary in height from receiver,. I have a 20moa ken ferrell base on my 5r and like it. Have badger 20moa and max 50 rings on my 700p300wm, leupy mk4s on a 700p 308. And soon will have warne steel base and perm attatch rings on my 308 ltr due to weight and budget( already have them sittingon my bench back home)
Look at pics, etc. I also think that badger offers ss base and rings that match the ss finish on the r5 Good luck

Hey Bob, thanks for the reply. What I was referring to was having 3 pcs (rail and 2 rings) compared to a 1-pc rail set. In all actuality, I would prefer to have the 1913 rail rather than not but I was a little concerned over adding height and multiple parts.

I'm glad I asked because now the rail with 2 rings is pulling me in that direction rather than the 1 pc direct mount.

PS... The SS finish will be gone ASAP after deer season!!

Re: n00b question... Mount advice QD vs Solid - M700

LaRue is making 20 MOA bases for remington 700s now, but I don't think they will be ready before deer season starts.

I had one on order since the end of september, but I had to cancel my order ( I need this rifle for deer season). I called Scott at liberty optics this morning and he is going to have my new seekins base down here in TX by Thursday. I should be able to get my rifle sighted in this weekend if I don't get rained out.

Re: n00b question... Mount advice QD vs Solid - M700

Badger 20moa base and low profile rings on my Remington 700 .308 and zero problems.

When you mount the rail skim with marine-tex or some other epoxy to get the best contact with the reciever. Use plenty of wax or other release agent on the reciever and screws.
When mounting the rings torque the rings to the rail with 60 inch pounds then torque the top screws to 15 to 20 inch pounds. It will be solid. I use a little blue loctite but I am OC.

Re: n00b question... Mount advice QD vs Solid - M700

Thanks for all the help guys. I ended up going with the NF 20 MOA base and rings and after following crumpmd's advice I mounted, lapped torqued, etc... to spec and that NF scope looks like she belongs.

I was able to make it ou to the local 100 yd. range to break the barrel in and sight the rifle in.

The first 3 shots (cleaning in between each one meticulously) finally brought me into the bull square.

The next 3 shots (still cleaning between shots) I went to the top right square and was within the 1" square with all 3 touching. Easily covered by a quarter.

The next 3 shots were at center bull... 3 shots covered by a dime!

Needless to say, I think the rifle is a keeper. Thanks again to all of you for your help.

Next up, Badger bottom metal...
