Narrowed it down to 4...

Need some input...

I've been shooting Swede mausers (amongst other milsurp bolties) for years and love the 6.5x55 (though also partial to 243 and 308 on paper). I am planning on getting a modern bolt stick soon, which would actually be my first one (have plenty of milsurps, modern levers, shot guns, AR's, etc, etc, but not a single modern bolt).

My primary concern is reliability as measured by jams and broken parts in all weather conditions. Desired accuracy is at least 1 MOA (or less).

Bearing in mind that it must be available in 6.5x55 (I have enough components for these to fill... well, a lot) I have narrowed it down to a few selections.

1. Winchester Featherlight M70
I love the cone breech, controlled feed mauser style action. It's something that I'm familiar with and is eminently reliable. It has been around for a long time and has solid aftermarket support, though production has been discontinued (correct me if I'm wrong on that last one). I'm also keen on the 5 round capacity and 3 position safety.

2. Tikka T3 Lite
I really don't know much at all about the action from a technical perspective. I've handled them quite a bit at the store and of course I'm enthusiastic about the silky bolt, 60 degree turn. I'm also enthusiastic about the out of the box accuracy, stiff action, etc. Finally, it's nice to see the aftermarket start to support these. But with all of those facts, I still am not fond of the closed top and I still know next to nothing about the bolt/action (push feed? etc).

3. Sako (75, 85)
It's a Sako.

4. Remington 700
Does the model really matter that much? With the aftermarket support these things have you can dress it anyway you want. That said, I'm not keen on the action or factory barrels. Despite the aftermarket, and noting the 4 round capacity amongst numerous other factors, these guys are probably last of my finalists.

...did you check out the CZ rifles...???...

...do any of those risle come in 6.5x55...???...

They all come in 6.5x55.

As a note, I have been shooting bolt guns for years, just not modern. My favorite bolt sticks are my m41b and my clunker, though still fun, PU.

With all due respect, CK, NO NO NO. The Remington has arguably the best parts availability in the industry, however it is FAR from the best of those 4. In fact, I would rate it at the bottom if you are strictly speaking of quality manufacture. I had one in 308 and it was a fine rifle, but not many experienced shooters will tell you they are the BEST. I now own a Sako TRG-22 and see what a factory rifle should be. All sakos are made to that standard. Tikkas are pretty slick as well and the few I have seen have been serious shooters. As for the M70, it is a flat bottom action, three position safety, and an integral recoil lug. You can banter about the merits of push feed vs CRF, but you need a history lesson as to why everyone shoots the 700. It is not a quality thing, but more of a cost, ease of manufacture, and timing (timing as in when it was released) thing.
There are a ton of smiths that will build you a wonderfully reliable, accurate rifle off the 700 platform. It will also have some of the best aftermarket support. All I am saying is that the statement that the 700 is the best of the 4 is WAY of base if not COMPLETELY erroneous. My $.02

FWIW my vote is for the Sako.

Glad we are on the same page Brand. when this weather clears we are going to break that TRG of mine and GAP of yours in right...Now back to the action thread.

Re: Narrowed it down to 4...

Talk to Alex at Euro optic, he had a few Sako Finnlight's for sale not too long ago. I'd say probably the best bet for a factory gun would be to snag a rare Sako M995 TRG in 6.5x55, but you will have to fight me to the death for it...I won't lose another.

I've always believed that this round belongs in either a European gun or in a custom gun by a smith that knows his stuff.

I completely agree.

This is why I am looking at M70, but parts availability now that production is down is a tad scary looking forward. Also, how was their end production quality? I like the stronger post 64 action, but the pre 64 features, and you only get that in the new "classic" ones.

Well, here is my take if you are looking at the M70. You can get a detachable mag system from CDI precision. You can always get a stock inletted for the action. The only real "consumable" will be the barrel which any smith can thread and screw on for you. As for the availability of parts. FN is still making the SPR which is the same action and FN still has the rights to manufacture the M70 IIRC. So, with that said, I would go for it if that is what you are looking for. If you are going for a ground up build you can get an SPR (M70) action from CDNN. if not, look for a used one on the boards or the net. PM Jeff at CDI precision. He will get you straight about the Winny. Best of luck.
