Need 1/2" comb riser but I shoot NTCH (nose to cha

I have an AP4 with a A2 stock. I am trying to correct my posture and need a 1/2" comb rise. I can't lower my scope this much. It would appear the PRS cheek piece is too far back for me for Nose To Charging Handle shooting. The charging handle would interfere if it were more forward.

Does anyone use a NTCH position with a Magpul PRS and does it suck? Will my head be off the front of the riser?

Any other ideas for me? Should I just ditch the NTCH technique? I'm in the boondocks and can't try these things in a store.

The UBR is an excellent stock but won't help with the height. You will not like the PRS for shooting NTCH(the way AR's were meant to be shot, IMHO), the front of the cheek piece will be digging in by your right ear. My honest opinion if you can't lower the scope enough(large objective lens, I assume?), it isn't the right scope for the rifle. If you can't get a proper cheek weld you will always be fighting with it and you won't enjoy it. I've had rifle/scope combos in the past with improper height issues and I've gotten rid of all of them. I've found that it will only cause bad habits and poor technique. Can also screw up the way you shoot other rifles.

I have an AP4 with a USO 1.5-6x with JNG MOA reticle and it is about the perfect optic for this rifle, as far as I'm concerned. Enough magnification for easy hits at 600yds + and fast, fast, fast at close range.

Good luck,
Erik

Pinocchio nose.

The scope is a 4X16 Millet TRS1 with a 50mm objective bell and the mount is a Larue LT 104.

I could get the scope down another 1/4" or 5/16" with a lower mount but it would still need a cantilever for NTCH.

I shoot at 300 yards (max range at the club) and further when I shoot in the wild. I'd like to replace the scope...someday

The UBR cheek peice is foward and the PRS is not. I own both. Any higher on the UBR and the charging handle will hit.Unless you are running a side charging handle upper!!I guess you could chance optics or tape a pad to your cheek!

Perhaps because some folks have different physiology than others.

What optic and what mount are you running? I shoot almost NTCH (scope or not) and I'm GTG with low rings on a Badger or YHM riser under my scope. I find almost all mounts built mounting optics on AR's are too high for my taste.

Getting a scope with objective that complies to you needs will be more conducive to good shooting than changing what's natural for you.

You'll have to lower the scope to 1.2-1.4" (1.4" is iron sight height) above the rail and move it forward enough to get your eye relief.

You can do this with the right combo of extended rail and rings.

I use a Hahn rail and low or med. TPS rings.

That's what I'd do (and have done-I got a YHM riser on a trade and used my TPS lows). LaRue's mounts are too tall for me on AR's, if Mark would make a 1.25 height SPR mount I'd be all over it!!!

I'm using several AR's and some have irons. Plus, yes, I'm a bit of a fat ass. Here is the rifle:

I'm staring to think about just getting a PRS and seeing if it will work for me. If it doesn't I can sell it cheap to you guys, right?

Re: Need 1/2" comb riser but I shoot NTCH (nose to

Here's how to tell if the PRS is going to work for you: pull your charging handle all the way out and note the distance from the scope. Just behind where the fully-extended handle sits is where the cheek riser starts. Will this be conducive to how you shoot? IMHO, it is better to get the right gear for what you are trying to do than to try to adapt to something completely different than what you are used to. Save the millet for a bolt rifle and put a smaller scope in lower rings kn the AR. Keep shooting NTCH - it's the best way to keep a consistent cheek weld from rifle to rifle(AR's, anyways...).

Re: Need 1/2" comb riser but I shoot NTCH (nose to

Thanks Erud. I tried that measurement and it's close to OK.

With the A2 stock I'm not quite at the charge handle as it is. The M4 stock on my other AR's I like it right at NTCH but that's a bit shorter than the A2 stock.

Sometimes I just want to sell my rifles, keep one and just get really good at just that one. Well maybe two. OK three.

I could use an AR15 PRS and custom file it to barely clear the LR308 charge handle to maybe gain another 1/4"....

Edit:

I stacked magazines on the stock and found 1/2" the perfect rise.

I found the perfect posture as my nose 1" to 1.5" back from the charge handle. This is with the A2 stock. Too far forward with a PRS--unless I extend the PRS another 1.5" longer than an A2 length. I can almost fall asleep on the rifle like this--this is what I want.
