I'm needing a load for the 77 SMK with IMR 8208 XBR to be used in a AR. Any experience out there would be greatly appreciated!

I have a friend that is looking for basically the same load he asked me to check on since he gets 77 Nosler CCs pretty much free.

I though I saw 23.3 or 23.7 in somewhere but can't find it. I am running the 75 A-maxs at 23.8 so I would think starting at 23.1 and going up .2 should find something close with your brass and primers. I cant get 77s to work in mine so please keep me in the loop with what you find.

Wow! From the lack of response I guess we are both going to be in the dark a while. I'm guessing it is the new secret recipe nobody wants to discuss!? I have some inside info that this is the new combo for a major manufactures new match loading. Might be wrong but I'm betting there will be some news release in the next few weeks. I'm sure someone out there has tinkered with it even with the limited supply of XBR.

starting point is 20.5 and max is 22.8 on the Hodgdon site with a SMK 77gn bullet.and the 22.8gn is getting a little over 2700fps.

no not yet.still looking for the powder in local stores.but when able to get it I will try in both my 223 and 308.but if your rifel is like mine it will like the bullet as fast as you can safely push it.its just that my rifel is a bolt gun.

I found the reference. It is an IMR advertisement 11x8.5 alking about temp indeference and consistency that came in a plastic rapped hunting or reloading mag (couldn't tell you which one). It lists one best charge for 204, 223, 22-250, 6ppc, and 308. For the .223 it lists 23.2g 77 Sie HPBT at 2.260 OAL with a WSR primer. It is an IMR advertisement with the whole legendary powders thing on the bottom. Suprised it doesnt match what the website shows max. The hodgdon reloading mag that came out over christmas showed higher too in one of the article.
Hope this helps give a warm fuzzy in working up your loads. I am loving shooting 75 A-maxs into one hole at 2906 with minimal deviation. I don't see any reason to go higher but since I am not seeing any issues I am going to try

Thanks again! I went out this morning and tried 23.0/LC case/ Wolf SRM /2.255". This is out of a AR wih a 26" Krieger 7.7 twist. Shot at 1050 Yds. looking at vertical dispertion at the same time chronographing with a CED M2.

Primers were very mild appearing!? My standby load of 24.5 of Vargay (2802 Avg./ 34 ES) does some slight flattening with the same primer (usually use Rem 7.5s). Needless to say I am disappointed in the velocity. This is also my first experience with the Wolf primers. I also have to add in this is a new chrono and I have had some doubt to the accuracy of the unit compared to an older M35 (since sold) measurements of the Vargay loading. Anywho I will try stepping the load up and see what pans out. Vertical spread was not super exciting, not a good as the Varget loading, even with the ES being less. Side note, this rifle is also suppressed and running the Tubb carrier weights(max) and the flat spring.

You have gotten 77 smk to preform well pass 700 to 1050 yrds? At what altitude are you shooting and what is size of the vertical spread of your best loading and for how many rds.

I wouldn't say "well", about 1.5 moa of vertical with the XBR @ 43.0. I could be happy with half that. I did run the numbers on Exbal and the calculated elevation is within .25 moa of actual, so velocity is very close on the CED?? Again is all of this "well", well I hope it gets better. I just recently started using the 77smk after running out of old original profile 75 Hornady BTHPM from the 1996 era. The old Hornady would run close to 2900 fps and I could regularly expect .5 to .75 moa all the way out to 1180 yds., the 77 is a dud in comparison to that old Hornady. I actually called Hornady several years back to ask why they changed it for the worse and the engineer just said cost and admitted that the new profile was not as good. Why change something that worked great!? I have tried the new ones and just have not been able to get them to shoot even as good as the 77 smk.
