Been looking at the Savage 10FCP McMillian for around $1100, It's 10 lbs and has a 24 inch barrel and as much as I love the stock, it has no adjustable cheek piece. Any thoughts on what to get for $1500 or less?
Thanks

Don't worry about the adjustable comb. Purchase a stock pack if you need to raise your cheek weld for your scope. The Savage is a great choice in that price range. I would also look at the Remington 700P, Remington 700 LTR, Remington 5R Milspec, and Tikka T3 Scout (if you can find one in stock) or Tikka Tactical.

Well I personally would go with a remington 700! I bought a rem 700 vsf .308 for 800 Went with a millett 4-16x50 with burris rings and a weaver 20 moa base an a bell & carlson. 1500-1700 will get you this.

It's for general long range fun, 500 to 1000 yards. I'm thinking about ordering a custom 260 from someone like Marc at Spartan rifles or GAP. I'm trying to stay fairly inexpensive on this rifle as I'll probably order the 260 or a 308 and want something to shoot during the wait.

For $1,500, you can buy a plain-Jane 700 ADL with a heavy barrel and stick it in a McRee chassis--that way you have a DBM machined-into the chassis, and just about as much adjustability as you can handle. It's not the lightest or most ergonomic chassis out there, but for the price it's hard to beat the features you get from one. Scotty McRee has a special still going on where you can get a folding TMAG chassis with a magazine for $740-ish (I got a few extra doodads when I ordered mine so my total was a bit higher than that) so as long as you spend less than $750 for a heavy-barrel R700 (not hard to find one for that price), you'd be very well set-up.

How about the F/TR in 308

if it were me, I'd put the extra $200 in the pot and buy the tikka sporter in 260 from euro optics, the new poor man's TRG.

Or just order the TRG in 260 and don't worry about a 9 month wait on a custom.

Re: Need a 308 under $1500

What I chose to do with my money was invest $1150. in a Remington 700 R5 in .223. The same vendor had some 5Rs in .308. Look him up on gunbroker.com. He's in Austin, TX and does a lot of 5R business. Just search under Remington 5R and you'll find his auctions.
