I am looking for a handheld GPS that will let me see multiple points in the same picture. We have several properties that join in a very strange way and I would like to plot the corners out so I can see if I am still on my on land for hunting season. I have been looking at the Garmin Oregon series but I don't know what to get. What is a good choice?

Re: Need A GPS

I would recommend almost anything by garmin. I don't have any experience with the Oregon series, but understand that they are some pretty good units. I just recently sold a GPSMAP 76S and it was a great unit. It will record and display multiple points/waypoints, and therefore should display what you are tying to show.

As a personal preference, I would stay away from anything that was a touch screen. This is because they are touch sensitive, and if it is in your pocket or you are wearing gloves, you tend to wind up all over the place when you are trying to see something.

For ease of use and gives you all the essentials that you need: I would go with any of the units that are in the 70 or 60 series. Some have maps, others just just show what you put in. For me, I prefer paper maps with the GPS as a position indicator. I don't like being bound to batteries. Most of these units have a real time accuracy after WAAS correction of about 2-3 meters. If you have time, let it sit on a point for about 30 minutes and it will position its self to around a meter. I have compared these to our work Trimbles post processed and this is true the majority of the time!

Anyway, stay below $300 bucks, any more than that and you are mostly buying fluff.

Take it easy.

Re: Need A GPS

If you have a android based smart phone, their is an app called gps status. You can pin point and save exact locations (free app). I lased a target at 704yds, then clicked to save the coordinates where I was, walked to the target, thing told me 704yds. So its accurate.

oh and you dont need a cell signal for it to work.

Re: Need A GPS

It really depends on what you want and if you will use it more than just hunting... camping or hiking a lot.

I really enjoy the the Garmin eTrex HC... its color but the maps arent the most detailed things in the world... but for just using it as waypoints its really nice. I think it runs around 130 or so. <-- I think this is probable one of the better choices. Also they have different versions of the eTrex that you can take a look at. Some that are a little bit more money but they offer a few more little things...

If you want to move up a bit the Garmin Dakota 20 is a nice little rugged setup. It has a bit of a smaller screen but still rather easy to see.

Then the one that I have is the Oregon 450t... what an awesome setup! For the price of it I would like to have got more but the Topo maps are amazing for sure! It is about the size and weight of an iPhone so that is kind of nice. What I dont like is the touch screen part because of possible scratches and what not. Its not as rugged as I would have like and for the money I spent I am kind of worried about it all the time.

Re: Need A GPS

I have the Garmin Oregon 450 and it pulls double duty. Secondary to map and compass when I'm out hunting, it also gives turn-by-turn directions for navigating new areas in a vehicle. You can see the screen easily in the sunlight and it doesn't scratch easy either. I would buy one from REI if you could because their return policy is crazy awesome, just make sure you have a membership before you buy.
