Need a hand with a budget build

I picked up a rem 700 sps (24"barrel, 1:10 twist, 308 cal).
I will say that the supplied stock SUCKS.

However, I have a limited budget for upgrades, no more than $700 is available for a new stock and glass. I'm only looking at shooting out to 400-500 yards max. Ideally I would like the completed package to weight under 12 lbs and preferably be under 10lb.

The rifle would be dual purpose - target shooting and hunting.

Sounds like a standard SPS with s sporter barrel, correct? I'd go to Stocky's and get a B&C Alaskan Ti BDL stock. Should run right at $200, and be MUCH better than the factory plastic.

Can't really get there from here.

The budget stocks in your price range are a bit heavier than the "equivalent" high dollar stocks.

Your best bet would be a B&C light tactical for about 225 and maybe teh nikon buckmaster 4.5-14 mil-dot, which is a fairly compact scope for what you get.

Sure, you can get there from here. 400-500 yards is not that far, and the "tactical" scopes and stocks will make things very heavy. The stock I noted above, along with the $350 Leupold 3.5-10 in the classifieds right now will be a very capable rifle will leave you about $150 for rings and ammo. For 400-500 yards you shouldn't need a canted rail. Grab some Talley lightweight rings.

With an SPS action, Alaskan Ti stock, Leupold scope and Talley rings you should sit all up around 8-8.5 lbs.

My only thought on the Alaskan Ti is that I'm a lefty using a right bolt, will that raised piece on the left side of the stock get in the way?

I just picked up a bushnell 4200 demo 3-12x44 for 500 on ebay. MIL/MIL illuminated.

I think you are going to be hard pressed to beat the price of the B&C stock for the quality that you are getting.

i would go with the Falcon 5-25x56 for the glass. that is around $450, but I have heard good things about it
