I'll be looking to upgrade from my cheep scope in the near future, as soon as funds allow. Just wanted to let you guys know what the rifle will be doing and hopefully you can point me in the right direction.

Going on a savage 30-06
95%of shooting will be at 100 yards.
5% chance I will do longer range shooting up to 500 yards.
bench-rest shooting only. From the car to the range. Size and weight is does not matter as it will never be used for hunting.

Just looking to see what the best scope is for the money. Thanks guys

Re: Need advice for what I do

Hi Romulus,

Fill out your signiature.

First thing you need to tell us is, whats the money?

The good thing about 100 yard shooting is, you need to crazy elevation on your scope, nor will you need a tapered base however It wont really hurt you to have this type of gear anyway.

Im a big fan of the Nightforce scopes as I feel they give the quality of a high end scope for the lowest price bracket of the high end scopes... and they are very rugged scopes. However they arent cheap either, they are your middle priced scopes.

A lot of your european scopes tend to be the high priced, high quality optics.

Theres a couple of american brand, good value for money scopes that can provide you with a decent scope at a reasonable price.

I will only comment on the scopes I have used before so I can tell you the Bushnell ELITE glass is pretty good for the price. If you have the cash you cant go wrong with a Nightforce. Schmidt and benders are good but command a decent price.

You wont need crazy magnification either so stick with something below 10x possibly a variable... 3-15, 4-16 will do you well.

A nice eye relief might be important to you... some people think the .30-06 has some kick to it, even tho its not that bad so if your new to the sport consider something with decent eye relief.

But anyways, whats your budget?

Re: Need advice for what I do

IMO, if your just doing 100yd bench shooting get a high-powered scope with good glass so you can see the groups you are shooting as you shoot them. we need to know a budget though but Imma guess and say less than $500 and I'd recommend a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50

Re: Need advice for what I do

My budget is really unknown for right now. I don't want to set a budget and it be way too low for a good scope. So once I know what I want then I will set my budget to that scope.

I'm not competing and no it doesn't have iron sights. Although my goal is to punch paper in the smallest groups possible.

As far as the eye relief. Once my new barrel with muzzle break gets installed I should have no problems with recoil. Although I'm not complaining now. It's there but I wouldn't call it bad.

Re: Need advice for what I do

Although I said I will set my budget to that scope. Obviously I'm not looking for the most expensive scope on the market. I just want a good scope for what I'll be using it for.

been doing a lot of reading on this scope. So far I am really liking it's simplicity and low price. Once I find the space I want to do longer range shooting. Just have to find it first is the problem.

I have shot this scope from 50yds.-1000yds. on BR rifles.
Is it a Nightforce or Leupold? No, But the clicks are repeatable, the AO works and the glass is good. I don't think you would be disappointed, as far as target and paper punching goes.

Re: Need advice for what I do

I will second the Viper 6.5 X 20. Have one and so far it has treated me well. .308 and over 1400 rounds through it. 20x is more then enough for you to see the holes at 100 and 300 if you have good eyes you can see your hits on paper as well.

Agreed!

I second (third?) this recommendation. The Weaver T36 is a great little scope for not a lot of money. The optics are good, the fine reticule is great, and the adjustments, while being a 'little' sloppy, hold perfectly true and are everything I need for shooting the tightest groups possible,...

I was a little reticent about purchasing the T36 when I first looked into getting a 'bench' scope as I thought I would go with a high-end March, Nightforce, or Leupold, but I gotta say, this little Weaver is pretty darn stout! It has really high magnification (36x) and a really fine (thin) reticule that allows you to hold insanely tight on the target. I call it my "Load Scope" as I'll often pull it off my 6PPC bench gun, where it usually resides, and slap it on another rifle I happen to be developing loads for in order to minimize the effects of point-of-aim shifts that I find with my other lower power, thicker reticule optics - works great! Everybody who reloads for hyper-accuracy should have something similar in their bag-o-tricks. You won't be disappointed.

Re: Need advice for what I do

+1 on the T36 as long as you use this rifle exclusively for the range, and if you feel you need that much magnification (x36). It has good reviews, although dated, (gun test among others) and it can be had for $400 or less...

You might also consider the SWFA SS 16x and 20x for $300. If you might be doing more than just the range, I would consider the SS 10x42 for about $300. It is totally possible to do a good job at 500 yards with 10x. On the other hand, it would not be an optimal job for hunting, where you would like a variable going down to the 3x or 4x range (I like 2.5x better).

These recommendations apply to the "for the money" choices. If you want to go high end it would be quite different.

Re: Need advice for what I do

I can say 100% I will never be doing any hunting. 100 yards is what the range goes out to where Ive been going. I really want to try longer range shooting once I get better.
I think I'm going to go with the Weaver T36 for now. I'll try to sell my current scope to my brother or something.
