So I have been bitten by the 3-gun bug, and need to get a variable power scope for my rifle. What are some decent ideas?

I have an Aimpoint already. I have though about getting a magnifier and flip to side mount, but then my dot will be huge on a small target at distance.

So I have been looking at:

Burris MTAC 1-4
(used) Burris XTR 1-4
Vortex 1-4 (HS or PS)
IOR Pitbull 4th Generation (big stretch)
Swaro Z6i (Elastic Man sleep on the couch for a year!!!!)

Anything I am missing that I should look at?

Im a big fan of the Trijicon Accupoint 1-4. Mine is the green triangle. On 1x, it works like a red dot, and it's very fast for me. On 4x it works very good for further out shots. Farthest I've tried with it has been 500, and it did perfect there.

Leupold 1-4, get one from swfa site used then send it to leupold and have them make a custom retical to your load . Mine is 200yd zero then 300 then 400 then 500yds. Both of my scopes one for 223 and one for 308 work great and they won't break the bank. Also be warned I don't think there is a cure for 3gun ites.

Re: Need advice on 3-gun scope (newby)

Yes, the dot will appear bigger, but it will subtend the exact same amount on the target, since the target will also appear bigger.

If you are running a 4 moa dot, it will subtend 4 moa with or without the magnifier.

That being said, there is also the burris tac-30. It seems to get very good reviews and is usually available for 300.

If you are on a budget, Mueller has a new 1-4 dot scope built along the lines of the meopta K dot (a daylight visible illuminated dot).

Dudes, take it from someone who run some 3-gun......really......you aint in the glass very much, as in why burn the bank on optics that won't make you shoot any better??

a decent and CHEAP 2.5x10 duplex reticule running cheap ball ammo will allow you to own anything 300yd and in, and with some wind doping skills you can be a champion at 500yd also.

No offense bro' but a 3-gun or multi gun rifle scope with 2.5x on the low end would be an absolute killer on the close up stages which comprise most of what you'll find at the matches.

What everyone tries to do is go 1x or as close to that as possible on the low end and 4-6x on the high end for the obligatory long range stage with flash targets. Tons of choices from cheap to $2k+. Get a cat tail throw lever for quick magnification changes.

The multi gun forum on Brian Enos is a great source of info and opinion for 3-gun scopes.

I've got a Weaver 1-5x24. I really like this scope. Its FFP which is not a plus or minus to me. But it does have a green and red lighted ret. The green on high is pretty usable in daylight conditions. And the glass is great. But that is just my opinion.

Re: Need advice on 3-gun scope (newby)

What are your typical distances? Lots of really short stuff, a 1.0 on the low end rules, but 1.5x won't hurt enough to worry about it. For smallish, difficult targets at 300 to 400 yds, something with 6x on the upper end is nice, but 4x gets you to the dance pretty well.

The PST 1-4 is great for close work since it's really 1.0 (a little past point blank, anyway). It gets a little difficult to pickup the center dot on 10" black flashers past ~300. I like it better than the Burris 1.5-6 I've played with a little (but YMMV).

The USO SN4 "Dual Focal Plane" in 1-4 or 1.5-6 (on paper) appears to be the cat's ass. I'm expecting one in 1.5-6 in the next week or so.

The Leupold "1.25"-4 Patrol (really 1.5x on the low end) appears to be a good choice as well for the price, but I've only seen the non Patrol version in 2-7. Nice clear glass on that version, but the heavy circle was too small and obscured too much, in my view.

Re: Need advice on 3-gun scope (newby)

I started with an ACOG TA01NSN with the JP reticle and used this in conjunction with a 1:00 mounted iron sight for the short targets. Never got really good with the side site, but the ACOG is a fantastic optic for 75 yds or more. Problem is, that most matches have tons of targets inside 50 yds. Still have tha TA01 but don't use it for 3-gun.

Next went to an Elcan Specter DR 1x-4x. This is a superb up close dot sight and has really decent glass for the longer stuff. My complaints were that it was either 1 or 4 with nothing in the middle, and I never had much faith in the external windage elevation adjustments. Never had it lose zero, just didn't like the idea.

Tried a Burris XTR 1-4 which is a nice scope.

Finally settled (for now, until my next bout of Scope ADD kicks in), on the Swarovski Z6i 1x6 that you listed. This one outstanding optic and works well for everyting I've encountered in 3-gun, but you could get 3 XTRS or 7 Tac 30's for the price.

If you're just starting, I'd recommend one of the lower priced scopes that were mentioned and spend a shit-ton on ammo and match fees. You'll get to try lots of stuff, get lots of advice, and develop your own preferences in the process.

Good luck, 3Gun is almost as addictive as PR.

I have used an ACOG TA11 for several years in 3-gun. Great for close to far quick shooting, not that I am quick

a lot of truth to that
if you are just getting into it would be better to get a TAC30 for 300 bucks which is a perfectly functioning 3 gun scope from point blank out to 500 yards and several cases of ammo to practice with than an expensive scope and a little bit of ammo...

no substitute for actual trigger time

A whoooool lot of truth to that! Practice time and ammo trumps higher $ equipment and bolt on accessories every time until you reach the absolute top of the game. Added bonus: Trigger time is fun

Re: Need advice on 3-gun scope (newby)

Thanks guys, forgot about the Meopta. I am going to head out and see if someone local has teh viper, and burris in stock at the same counter to look them over.

I agree with the "try the cheaper glass" until you find what you want, but I also always hear "cry once buy once!!!!"

Keep the ideas coming. I am also going to take a hard look at the Bushnell 1-6 when it hits shelves too.
