I am considering a Noveske 18inch SPR match grade.
I was wondering if anyone has advise on a barrel that would provide similar performance but hopefully for a bit less cost.

The BCM 18" SS are nice, but seems like they're always out of stock. At least any time I look. WOA are readily available though and as good or better.

1. White Oak (known quality, performance)
1A. Rainier (been hearing very good things but no personal experience, great prices)

My opinion of Noveske: good stuff that carries a 25% to 30% "name premium" versus what you can buy comparable quality for elsewhere. I recently purchased a Noveske upper receiver for a build, somewhat against my better judgement, but BCM was out of upper receivers, as were several other of my regular sources. So I thought what the heck, lets see what its like to go first class. Paid $140 for an item I'd normally pay $80.00 (Aero Precision) to $100.00 (BCM) for. In terms of finish here's how I'd rank them, best to worst:

1. BCM: by far the best finish of the three.
2a. Noveske: better anodizing than the Aero, lesser forging/machining
2b. Aero Precision very little difference between this and the Noveske for 60% of the price; I ended up using the Aero for the build.

I know an upper receiver is not a barrel but I think this helps illustrate the point. I don't know how he does it but somehow John Noveske has managed to conjure up a level of 'mystique' around his name that I don't think is warranted. I'm absolutely convinced that you can by equal or better quality for allot less $$.
MHO, YMMV!
