Setting up a savage 10pc in 308. Scope is on its way and bases and rings. I need some bipod suggestions to shoot from prone. I have never bought one before so what do I need to have or stay away from? I'll buy a decent one I do not want to buy twice if something breaks.

Thanks

Order a PRS rail from Seekins, remove the swivel studs up front, and attach rail. Here's what it will look like

There are some Harris knockoffs out there that aren't bad. Be careful about how high you get in to. Some of the short bipods that attach to a rail end up being too high for my tastes. I like the 6'-9' harris type that attaches to the swivel stud.

For your very first bipod I would recommend a Harris notched leg swivel in either 6"-9" or 9"-13". If you are going to be doing more field shooting than range/bench shooting go with the 9"-13". Also a Pod Loc or SARGE knob is really a must to adjust your swivel tension. Avoid the Harris knock-offs unless you are severely budget strapped and need one before you can save up for a Harris.

Triad Tactical did an very informative video on the different Harris models a few years back. Steve is top notch and can help you out:

Eventually you may want to step up to an Atlas and if you do look at the sometime in 2014 to be released PSR model.

I would like to spend up to 150 right now, also thenks everyone for replying I have been trying to reply back but through tapatalk on my I phone it doesn't post till the next day for some reason Lol. My rings and bases are coming in the mail so I should be mounting the scope up this week.

I would spend a $150 on red at the casino to double you money and get an Atlas..... but that's just me. =)

Ok ok you do have a good point! Ha ha. I know I have kinda a budget rifle but I haven't cheaped out to a certain extent on everything else so ill have some overtime lined up at the shop.

There was actually an imbedded link in my post to it, but likely very difficult to see on the phone:

The PSR model is several months out and nearly twice your current budget. I've been shooting LR comps for a few years and it will be my first Atlas, not because I need it, but because I want it.

Check out the link Rob posted to the Harris, good deal and will cover are your needs.

Get the Harris BRM-S which is the 6-9" height with notched legs and swivel. It will do everything you need it to do. Been using them for years on my match rifles. On sale now at Midway. Harris S-BRM Bipod Leg Notch Sling Swivel Stud Mount 6 to 9 Black

Throw on a Pod Loc and you will be into it for about $115.

For your budget of $150 the BRM-S (probably around ~$100) is a good route. The 'S' allows it to swivel so if you're on an uneven bench, you can level it out - you want that. I prefer the shorter ones, less sandbag to use off a bench.

I have a handful of Harris bipods, they work well. I have a VersaPod, I'd not buy another (it came on a nice rifle). The Atlas is real nice (I have one) but it will not attach to a swivel stud. They either attach to a AI spigot or a 1913 rail. The atlas allows you to tilt and lock the legs forward to lower the stance.

I'm going through this now, I'm ordering a short rail section (4" 1913) to replace my swivel stud so I can use a picatinny/1913 Atlas (the other type mount besides the AI mount) use it on my Remington 40X. That whole setup is around $300.
This will require a second atlas purchase (one for AI, the other for rails), they are that nice.

+1 on the Harris BRM-S 6-9". It is a quality made bipod and the notched legs work great for getting your rifle up to the perfect height, this is probably the best option for your budget.

I like the Harris 9-13" swivel, notched-leg, with a pod-loc.

For me it's a great 90% bipod. Never been too tall, but sometimes a little short when shooting uphill. I keep a 12-25" for those situations.
