Mt Horrible, SC
Situations have rendered us without our outfitter on possibly my Dads last elk hunt, we tried last year in Mt but were beat by the wolves.

Selfguided we go as we are due to land Thurs Oct 15th and depart Oct 27th and we can't recoup plane fares. We have reserved rooms in Gunnison at the Gunnison Inn and will hopefully have a four wheel drive rental.

Any help or direction concerning which unit would be best 54,55,551 for OTC would be more than greatly appreciated and kept under strict confidence.

I have the local DOW number and plan to contact them monday. Ihave been pouring over stats and aerials but that only gets us so far.

So far I have leaned towards 55 and thingking of areas Horse Basin,Bostin Peak, Spring Creek,Quartz Creek,Fossil Ridge,Collegiate Peaks,Maroon Bells to start anyone have direction on these locations and probability of high crowds animals etc?

Any insider directions would go a long way and in return I would like to offer a free wild hog hunt or an inshore redfish and trout trip you provide your lodging, I will provide the blood.

Kind Regards to all.

Checkout this link. I don't any real specific info. I hunted this area just north/ northwest of Pitkin. There is some deep valleys with some open mesas and and low areas that are accessable by truck and then hike in. I do not know if you can get 4 wheelers off of acess roads that would be a DNR ?. There is an excellent population of Mule Deer as well and some dandy bucks so consider a combo tag. Remeber also the weather that will sure be a factor and could push the Elk low and out of the Mountain tops. My guess is you won't be able to climb very high yourselves to get good glassing vantage points. The trip I was on was also self guided but the locals can be very helpful in the town of Gunnison. I hope this helps.

Guys thanks for the help anything is appreciated as we are quite the bind but steadily improving. Talk about getting pushed to the front of the line!

Still have a little more checking to do. Some good friends have hunted the Fossil Ridge area for the last few years. I can get you the GPS locations for their "honey hole" as they will not be there for this years hunt. One of the guys in their group wanted to try something different this year. I'll try and help out where I can.

Good luck in this area. The winter kill was devistating there last year. I've hunted this area for 15 years and last year I didn't see one elk track or even one elk scat.(even by the rivers) That was a first. I saw allot of bones..........

Jimmy what areas are you reffering to as this is the first I have heard of that, most outfitters and locals I have talked to are quite optimistic as it was such a mild winter last year? We will be moving between 54 and 55.
