I have a howa/vangaurd long action and would like to do a custum build. The action is now in a 7mm RM. Whats the largest case I can use? Even safely opening up the bolt face, etc. Any and all ideas, opinions and recomendations are welcome.

Re: need guidence on a build.

Factory makes 300 Wby mags on them , I don't see whay you coulden't shoe horn an Ultra mag case in their , a little feed rail work , you may be limited to the OAL though.

After looking at the 338 Norma mag that looks like it should be a great parent case for a hot 30m cal or 7mm with out needing to much action work and getting boned with a short OAL

What the fuck's it got to do with ya.

Re: need guidence on a build.

Depends on your plans for the rifle. I had thought about doing a WSM on it for the very long forgiving OAL that I could get. I've looked and It would take a good bit of work to make it a 338 because of the OAL issue along with the bolt face, but that's something better asked of a gunsmith. Either way, the vanguard actions are very nice for a factory rifle, especially ones in that price range.

You might look at BR's post count and sign on date....
then compare it to your own....

Also compare his one word question, to your rude beratement of him for it...

Yup they are. I have two Vangaurds (7mm RM blued, .243Win Stainless), this makes three and a MK V chambered in .300 WTBY Mag. My only issue with the Vangards is the trigger creep. But that's fixable. The actions are tough and over built, and a good starting point for me. And if I bung it up I'm not out a couple grand for an action. I just want to do it to do it. It'll be a blast. I think.

Re: need guidence on a build.

Manners, McMillan and even Bell & Carlson inlet for the Howa/Vangaurd so you have some stock options for it. The trigger is actually fixable with a new spring and a little polish or you can get one from either Timney or Rifle Basix or both. I think it would be interesting to see a .338 Edge on a Howa platform. It's a necked up 300RUM so you shouldn't have length issues and you won't have to open the bolt face. If you aren't familiar with the round read this article: http://www.longrangehunting.com/articles/338-edge-1.php

Re: need guidance on a build.

My plan is to build a stock of my own design. I've done the basic design and will tweak it as I go. I plan to do a wildcat magnum chambering in .30 caliber and do what ever work is feasible to accommodate OAL within reason. All from scratch with exception of the action, including chamber reamers, reloading dies, rifling broaches etc. I was thinking of buying a barrel blank but have decided to fabricate that as well. I have a small mill and lathe here at home and access to a full manual and CNC shop as well. I trust myself with all the fabrication work but the bolt and receiver I'm wary of building. Maybe later when I gain more confidence with my machining abilities. I've done some simple falling block stuff that worked well as a single shot platform but not an intricate bolt action. Lack of funds hinders my purchasing power for a high dollar designer action and I figured a Howa/ Vanguard was a good place to start. I'm just a "shade tree" smith with a fun hobby, lol.
