Need help/diagnosis with my 10/22

I put together a 10/22 and have been shooting it 3-4 times over the past week. All at 50yrds, variable ammo. Alot of the groups were more like patterns but I did manage to get a few in the .73 and .64 edge to edge ballpark. I am not ruling out it could be me but there seems to be zero consistancy from group to group (see attatched target photo). I tried a pressure pad in the barrel channel near the end of the forearm, tried one about a inch back from the forearm, also tried one in the barrel channel just infront of the v-block. I have tried different torque on the action screw and adjusted the tension on the rear hold down screw from zero to pretty tight (didn't have my torque wrench).

Target exhibit A, 50yd, CCI SV ammo, 1 layer of innertube for a pressure pad 1/4" from the end of the forearm:

Parts list:
Rifle is a older 10/22 action
Bolt has recently been headspaced, pinned firing pin and radiused
New PC hammer & hammer spring (eliminated light strikes)
Trigger plunger installed backwards (I was trying everything)
New Hi Desert Dog 16" stainless bull barrel free floated to the v-block but I did try various pressure pads in the barrel channel.
New Tactical Solutions 15 MOA scope mount (yes it's tight)
New Tasco 6-24x scope
Weaver rings (yes they are tight)
Rhineland Arms Leopard stock with rear lug hold down bolt (not bedded)

Some other notes:
One thing I am concerned about is the inlet of the stock. For whatever reason my barrel wants to go left. I thought maybe it could be caused by the rear screw so I tried shooting with it loose..no difference if it was tight or loose. With the innertube in the barrel channel it stays pretty straight but I'd think it could be putting side pressure on the barrel..

Ammo used:
Remington target (yellow box, blue label..not the Eley stuff)
Winchester T22 target
Wolf match
SK standard plus
Eley black box
Aguila something a guy gave me at the range
CCI SV

Re: Need help/diagnosis with my 10/22

You might try a little bedding around the rear of the receiver.
I also bed the front of the receiver and an inch or so of the barrel in front of the V-block and float forward of there.

If it's moving around in the stock that can't be good. I've never had trouble with the takedown screw coming loose, so I have no suggestions there.

Accuracy off a bench with these things is all barrel and ammo. From your RFC thread I see you seem to have the scope all tight and everything. I don't feel like the slop of the trigger group in the receiver is a big factor.

I have no experience with your barrel, playing mainly with Clark KID, and VQ barrels, but I've had a number of stock barrels shoot reliably under an inch with selected ammo. Some of them around 5/8". The premium barrels are incredible.

I wouldn't worry about your trigger for now. I use PC hammer/sear kits in the field guns; they're fine, but off the bags that's a non-issue.

You've used some good ammo, it's your barrel or bedding. I guess I like your rear hold down, but a little JB Weld or AccraGlas under the front lug and first inch of barrel and a dab under the rear might do wonders. Just remember to wax up, and leave out the trigger and screw. Bind with rubber bands (surgical tubing or inner tubes). Cure overnight and pull it out, then reassemble.

Re: Need help/diagnosis with my 10/22

You seem to have covered everything but the bedding. Have to agree with frog. The inletting on the stock may not be true since the barrel has a tendency to go left which should really be of a concern. You could also borrow or buy a cheap hogue stock for $70 and seen if this gets you better groups. If it does than its the inletting. If not you might need a better barrel. Green Mountain makes them accurate and at a resonable price. Top of the line barrels I like and own are Kidd. Go here this guys can help you out they are tops in rimfire.

Re: Need help/diagnosis with my 10/22

I'm going to have it bedded. It can't hurt any..

I've cleaned it and left it dirty. Pretty much the same results, no consistancy.

I don't know what the torque on either action screw is. I didn't have my wrench with me. I think part of the problem is there is no pillar or metal for the front action screw. I am jsut compressing wood at this point.

I don't know what CBS stands for...

I've tried shooting with a bipod and rear bag, front and rear bag, a front rest and also one of those rests that holds the whole gun.

Thanks guys

I don't recall what configuration I was using when I shot this particular target. I have used a rest and have shouldered/ bagged.

Re: Need help/diagnosis with my 10/22

I have found that the key to bedding the 10/22 is to bed around the front lug/take down screw and a few inches into the barrel channel, and then freefloat the action. I recently played around with my 10/22, even machined up a hadfull of brass action pillars. Here is what it looks like, pillar installed.

Re: Need help/diagnosis with my 10/22

I'd like to have it bedded. I don't feel comfortable doing it myself though. So I'm in the market for someone to do it...

I'd like a pillar installed since there is no metal around the front action screw and over time the wood will compress and change things.

I have also been reading on RFC about adjustable bedding. Maybe we can debate the pro's & con's of adjustable vs solid?

Re: Need help/diagnosis with my 10/22

you might try some hi end ammo. other than the ely, nothing you listed shoots in my rifle, and the ely only so so. Feed it some lupa or other hi end ammo and if it works you know its not the gun. Then keep looking for something cheaper that the gun likes. What is the quality of the high desert dog barrel?

Re: Need help/diagnosis with my 10/22

I'm not investing the money is "high end" ammo until it is consistant. I have used decent ammo but I don't think it's a ammo issue. I have shot .6xx edge to edge groups and the .51 group above was shot with CCI SV. The problem is one good group, 10 patterns...one good group, 10 patterns.

I can't really say how the barrel is. Once things are sorted out, if it holds .51 groups I'd say it's good. If they stay at 1.xx"..well, maybe not so good.
