so my friends have a lake and from the one side to the other is 800 yds roughly.

i decided on a viper pst.. they will be launched soon and i wont have the money for at least 3 months from now if that, so in the mean time i was playing with an online ballistics calculator and just plugged in some raw basics and it said that my "round" would drop 28 moa and with a 10 mph wind would drift 7 moa

so from reading a lot of the posts in here most of you say that you dont dial in the wind you just i think the proper word is hold over.

so my question is how do i know how much to lead, at that distance wouldnt the vipers values be different ? i would be getting the ffp model viper, I do think i read some where and correct me if iam wrong but ad different distances the values of the ret change, now its 2 am and i could only be using half my brain here but can some one set me straight or least try and set me straight

I would really like to take that steel plate on the cold bore shot... that would rock so

Re: need help understanding something

you can do a couple of things.
Dial in for wind if you want to. There is a knob for that.

Buy a scope that is MOA/MOA, use the reticle accordingly.

Buy a mil/mil scope and change the output of the ballistics calculator to mils.

If it is a FFP mil/mil scope, it will subtend mils at all ranges and at all magnifications.

Re: need help understanding something

so what that means is if iam 7 moa off left or right and want to hold over i could just come over that 7 moa on the ret lets say its 3.5 marks ( just an example ) and bingo iam on no matter if its 100 or 1k yards ?

i though it was like that with ffp but idk maybe iam just brain dead tonight ( or in general )

roughly how accurate are the ballistic calculators ? has any one used the info to make a cbs and it was spot on >

thanks for the heads up... thats what i though

As long as you are playing go to the Vortex website and check out their long range ballistics calculator. The have a good program and a couple of videos. They also walk you through the process of getting custom made elevation knobs for your pst that allow you to adjust the elevation for range rather than clicks, (good for one load only). Try googling Long Range Shooting for a simulation game where you range targets using a mildot and adjust for elevation and wind. It will help introduce you to the thinking process required for long range shooting. Vortex site link http://www.vortexoptics.com/content/lrbc_tutorials

Re: need help understanding something

When you buy your scope select one that is Mil Mil so that your knobs are in the same type of measurement as the reticle. That makes it much easier to think through. Measure using the reticle the distance from where the bullet strike hit to where you want it to go and correct either by holding off with the reticle or by dialing in the correction or a combination. 4.3 mil dial .3 and hold on the 4th dot.
