i bought a 7wsm rifle and want to measure the oal depth for berger bullets. i have a 300 wsm guage and want to convert it. this is my first time trying to form brass. im assuming i just run it through a 7mm wsm full lenth sizing die and then trim to length. i may have to neck turn but am not sure. can someone with experiece please help me out on this subject.

thanks

Re: 7wsm oal length guage from a 300

so i have taken an old 300 wsm fired case and ran it through a 7wsm fl sizing die. i then trimed the neck shorter than the chamber measured using the sinclair 280 chamber length guage. i turned the neck down to reduce any neck thickness issues as this is just a throw away case once im done.

i ran it through the 7 wsm full length sizing die 3 more times, after turning the die down further each time an eighth of a turn.

when i put it in the rifle the bolt handle will not close or even budge. I am not forcing anything. just stopping. the bolt will not even close.

can anyone help.

my next step will be to send in a couple of fired cases to get threaded.

just trying to get a guage for use with my hornady oal guage.

thanks for your help

Sometimes when you neck down brass you can get a slight bulge at the junction of the body and the start of the shoulder. Check that out.

Also if your going really light on the bolt- give it some force. Don't go crazy, just a little firm and see if you get shiny marks on the troubled area of the brass. At the worst you can peck it out with a cleaning rod down the bore...

Just load a dummy round - i.e. no powder and no primer - and seat the bullet a bit long. Hold it over an old fashioned kitchen match to deposit soot on the bullet. Keep seating it a 0.005 - 0.010 shorter until there are no marks on the soot. A marksalot on the bullet will work also. Way easier for me than the Hornady gauge.
