This topic has probably already been posted on here but this is my first time to be on this site. I live down here around berryville, ar where nighthawk tactical is out of and i have been up there to see their craftsmanship and detail to their rifles and i really like what i see. I am having a real hard time deciding which caliber to go with. I think a 300WM is a great all around round as far as reliability and the fact that they are fairly cheap to shoot. I do want a round that will still be grouping good at a thousand yards and still have enough energy to put down elk or mule deer. The 300 RUM has its advantages of not being a belted case, get more reloads out of it maybe, able to use more powder with the bigger case. I don't know anyone around here reliable enough with a RUM to make my decision off of what they know. I'm also debating on barrell length. I'm thinking 28" for the 300WM or 29" for the RUM. The barrell i'm going with is still around .750 at the crown so I'm wanting to go with a fluted barrell. Thanks for any help. I'm not 100% set on either of these two calibers so if any of you have another route in mind i'd be glad to hear it. Thanks again. Posted this same post in another forum and only got one response hopefully I'll have a better turn out here.

Re: need help with a decision

mho, which is my no means a true professional one is that the 300WM is plenty for 1000, cheaper to reload, cheaper to shoot (factory), longer barrel life, more available factory offerings. I do shoot both, and like both but if I were to have to pick, and be practical, it would definitely be the win mag and I built mine with a 25" barrel + brake so about 26.5" finished length hart 5.5 fluted. Thats just my $.02.....maybe it will help

For what your after, think,... 30-06 in a modern loading with Re22, 26" barrel and a 190smk. Much cheaper than either of the other two and will not beat you or your wallet up, near as much.

Re: need help with a decision

I have a 300RUM and imho, the 300win will do everything you could ever need it to do cheaper, better brass, and longer barrel life.

Re: need help with a decision

I shoot a wsm, it does everything I've ever asked it to, very tight at 1000 yds. and so far its killed several deer and elk and also antelope, including a deer at 905 yds and an elk at 450 yds, and an antelope at 850yds. plenty of gun for what you describe.

Re: need help with a decision

Another vote for the .30-'06. I'd keep it down to a 24", or at most 26" barrel. It does what one asks, with ease, availability, economy, and recoil that's more compatible with significant practice.

If you're looking to use it as a hunter in the field, then match shooting features may well be counterproductive.

For Hunting, a 24", maybe 22" medium to lighter countour, in a stock with a straighter grip, 3-9mag at most scope, and weight in the 7-9lb range, works much better.

For Match work, a 24", maybe 26" or even 28", heavy barrel contour, in a stock with a more vertical grip, higher mags scope, and a weight around 12lb will serve better.

Magnums, naaah.

Re: need help with a decision

30-06 is certainly universal and works great. However, the only custom rifle I have built was started with a 300 wm action. I looked into what you are concerning 'what can I do going to a custom set up'. I decided to go back to the 300wm simply because you can get ammo anywhere, and brass is not so expensive. For me, the ablity to buy ammo was key, and outweighed any extra performance from the 300 RUM. IF I go elk hunting I'd pack this rifle, and IF I lost my rounds I could buy ammo at wally world.

The rifle I built is essentially a M70 based Sendero and I really do like it.

Whatever you decide it comes down to what YOU want when having a rifle built.
