Need help with new rifle Badger or Surgeon ?

Re: Need help with new rifle Badger or Surgeon ?

all about personal likes, I run a badger and love it. Its a great action if you can get your hands on one. If you would fill out where you are, im sure that someone around you has one or the other that you could talk them into letting you play with it

Re: Need help with new rifle Badger or Surgeon ?

I like both actions but just seem to prefer the Badger action over anything else. I would also suggest you looking into the GAP Templar action, it is excellent.

Fill out your city and state please.

really most custom action are good. the best value by far is the stiller action. what stock are you going to use.

Re: Need help with new rifle Badger or Surgeon ?

I've been "struggling" with this same problem. I'm leaning towards going with an AICS chassis which would have to be modified for a bit over $100 to take the Badger Action.

Here's what information I have gathered over the past several weeks.

Badger is about 1 pound heavier, but is seen as bombproof. However... I have not heard anybody bashing Surgeon's durability at all.

Badger's action can take AW magazines with some modification to the stock and action if I remember right (Not 100% sure if anything else has to be modified) while the Surgeon and Badger both take AICS mags.

Badger's bolt to action tolerance is very tight while the regular Surgeon's tactical bolt is not. However... you can just ask Surgeon for a target bolt that will make it just as tight fitting as Badger's.

Surgeon has a wide variety of bolt handles, but Badger has a shorter bolt throw that some seem to love.

In the end... it almost seems as if it's done by aesthetics. Surgeon actions are like perfected versions of the Rem700 action with no problems whatsoever. Badger is very reminiscent to an AI, and only had a few kinks initially that have all been corrected now. Their prices slightly favor Surgeon... but it really doesn't mean much in the end.

Hope this helped.

That is incorrect.

The Badger has a long bolt throw or cycle distance. The Badger does have a shorter bolt "lift" due to the locking lug pattern.
Which would be more important for shot to shot speed, bolt lift or bolt throw? Ask 100 people and you will get 100 different answers.

The Badger is a very nice action but many people incorrectly describe what is happening with these type actions.

Re: Need help with new rifle Badger or Surgeon ?

The M2008 comes ready to run the AW mags as does the AICS chasis, my chasis's mag release was cut a little bit to run the AICS mags, no biggie. But both can accomodate the AW magazines with out any mods.

Thanks for the correction. Seems like I should have done my homework better.

Re: Need help with new rifle Badger or Surgeon ?

I have had alot of expierence with Surgeon, can't say enough good things about this action or rifle. I have a Badger build on the way. I can see where Surgeon has improved the Rem action. Not sure if Badger has realy done the same to the AI action? I believe both can make accurate platforms. Surgeon has been around awhile and has a proven track record. Look at the smiths who use them on their guns as a routine option! That says alot, with the Badger time will tell.
