Im just getting into long range shooting and am looking to get a new scope for my rifle. Im wanting to spend around $600. Im looking for something that has adjustable magnification. Also what is better FFP or SFP. Any help would be great. Thanks Guys....

You don't state what rifle you have and what kind of long range shooting you will be doing. Personally I have switched to FFP and mil/mil as a standard. It would be a good choice for learning with and is easier to use than mil/moa scopes.
If you are banginging steel the SWFA SS 3-9x42 is hard to beat and using the SH code of SSHide will get you a 10% discount. If you are shooting percision like small groups on paper you will want more magnification and I'd suggest a Vortex PST.

Since you just registered to post that question, Id suggest doing about a weeks worth of reading through this forum before asking people to do your work for you. There is ample information here to get you started on your decision, once youve done research and have it narrowed down to what you want, if you still cant make an informed decision then post a question.

Re: Need help with New Scope Puchase

If you want to shoot long range (1000 yards), you will need a scope that has 40 moa of UP elevation. When they make a scope with 80moa of elevation, 1/2 of it is UP an 1/2 of it is DOWN. If you put a canted base, say canted by 20moa, then that amount ADDS to the up. So if you put it on the above example scope, you would have 60 moa of UP.

The minimum elevation adjustment that will work is 40moa, then put it on a 20moa base and you will have 40 moa of UP.

The other thing is the reticle and elevation knobs. There are two systems, mils and moa (groan). If you've never had a scope and have not shot long range, mils are probably the way to go. If you go mil reticle and mil knobs (turrets) then your choices in inexpensive scopes are more limited.

You can get a Nikon Buckmaster with mil reticle and moa turret for $300 that is reliable and will shoot fine out to 1000 yards and beyond. Plenty of others also. Bushnell and the others that will be mentioned. They all work pretty well.

Wow Thanks Jonaddis84 your alot of help. I would have thought that the time it took you to write your response you could have given me some real advise. Ive done alot of research, but was thinking some of yall with more LR shooting experiance could point me in a good direction. Thanks Pogue

Prairiedogdundee thanks for the help. From what ive read the scopes that are FFP are going to be easier to use. I just didnt know if thats what most people use. Also from what ive read I should look at something that the reticle matches the mearure adjustment.

Does anyone know if you can get a bushnell 4200 In mil/mil.
