Need help with rifle choices

Hello, I am new here and just got some funds saved up to get a new bolt action rifle.

What I am looking for is a good rifle for reaching 500 yards maximum with sub MOA groups. I have been looking around and have come across a few rifles.

Savage Precision Carbine .223 / .308
Savage 10 FCP-K .223 / .308
CZ 527 Varmint Kevlar .223

My reasons to chose the .223 caliber is I am well used to the balistics of the round. My primary uses will be paper punching along with Prairie Dog, Wild boar, and Coyote hunting.

So with that in mind I dont believe that the 308 would be very ideal. While I do understand that 500 yard shots will be difficult with this round, I think that it would be a good starting point in the learning curve.

What do you guys know about these rifles? What other rifles are out there for the same or less $$?

My budget is $800 max on the rifle alone.

you can find some good used rifles here for under your budget price! I would go with the 700. 1:9 twist so you can run a heavier bullet. great platform to upgrade from down the road.

Look at the SPS in a 243. They will usually stabilize the 105 AMAX which would do a great job on the bigger Hogs and Yotes. Put a muzzle brake on there and you're set.

The remington i believe is the cheapest cost wise, id get that if i was planning on customizing with a new stock and barrel. The savage 10 FCP-K i think is the best rifle of the bunch, new stock and some good glass and it should be a very accurate rifle.

Does anyone have info on the CZ 527? I would like to get the tikka cause of the 1:8 twist, but have hear you cannot fit your heavier grain ammunition into the magazine. Is this only with reloads or are some factory loads such as hornady and blackhills 75 grain loads subject to this problem?

I am not looking to build a rifle as I do not see much funds available for such a project in the future.

I have a Rem 700 sps tactical in 223 and it shoot's very well it stabilises the 77smk's and they fit in the mag .

So my vote is the Remington .

I have a bone stock LTR in .223 and it has been great! It is my coyote gun and actually killed a couple whitetail with headshots. 69 gr. SMK's have treated me real well. I found it used for $550 from a guy that felt he had to shoot light bullets and couldn't group well with it. My only Remington and I am quite pleased with it.

I have a CZ 527 kevlar in 204 and it is the most accurate rifle I have hands down. some of my other guns include Tikka 243, Tikka 22-250 varmint, CZ 550 kevlar 22-250, Remington sps varmint 223. I am sold on the Tikka rifles for a couple reasons they are light and I do alot of hiking with my gun so a light gun comes in handy and they shoot very good out of the box. Now Bell & Carlson is making a drop in stock for them so you can upgrade down the road if you want. I know with my Tikka 243 I can load the bullets out to the lands and still fit in the mag for a couple of different bullets. my Tikka 22-250 I couldn't get close but that gun would shoot 5 shots into a dime size group at 100yards with alot of bullet jump. There was a CZ kevlar 223 on another site just a week ago for $525 you might be able to look around and find something used.

Anyone out there with th Savage FCP-K scoped that could weigh their rifle for me? Just curious but there is a 1-lbs difference between the 223 and 308 on the savage website. Depending on actual weight I may just order one in 308. I have travled the state and have handled all the rifles I was looking for except the CZ and so far the FCP-K seemed to be the nicest. The weight may be a factor when hicking accross the long fields where I shoot. Also it seems that this rifle would shoot very soft between the squishy stock pad and the nicely made muzzle brake. How would these items compare on the Precision Carbine if I were to find the threaded model? Would the Carbine still have the overly sharp recoiling muzzle?

No experience with the .223 but I have a Savage 10 fcp-k in .308 and it is the most accurate out-of-the-box rifle I have ever seen.

I can't remember the weight - I took my stock apart and added lead shot in epoxy into the stock (among other modifications) - so it's a heavy beast now. I don't recall it being especially heavy or light originally. I don't think you'd have any trouble with it.

I don't think you could get under 1moa accuracy at 500y with any of the rifles you have listed. I think your best bet in 223 would be a Savage 12 (like a 12BVSS).

What kind of accuracy is realistic at 500 yards with a 223 or 308?
